I'm setting up a webservice which I will be selling to a nmber of my clients.

It will be a fully secure solution using a thawte certificate.

I want to run it on my own server so I can control every element of the security (very important to this app). It'll be a Windows 2000 server.

Basically I've never done any co location/dedicated hosting stuff before so have no idea of what to expect or how to organise this...

So can any of the PH massive help me out?

Any help gratefully recieved!

Hi,

Colocation is a simple enough task,

just make sure that if your new to it, you go with a Firm thats willing to put the time and effort in to help you.

there are plenty of places out there, offering what you need.

If your sure you want to use your own box over a rental, then just approach them and ask them for details.

Rental is another option, givs you the benefit of piece of mind, regarding hardware (free replacements in event of failiure inside 2 hrs) etc, as well as a much cheaper instant cost.

I run a few hosting / co-lo companies, with clients sizing from small 1 man bands, thru to middle of the road SME's, upto Large home name PLC's / Rock Stars / Bands.

but I am one of many.

My advice is check around, check the prices, and check the support.

Remember, cheapest ISNT ALWAYS best.

£10 a month for 100000gb may seem a bargain, and it is, for the 1 week its semi up

Ask yourself
if you NEED 24/7 Support
if you NEED 99.999% uptime
if you NEED physical access 24/7
if you NEED 24/7 Reboots
if you NEED 24/7 telephone numbers

different places will offer different packages.. just dont fall into the trap of reading the details of the best, and then seaching around for the prices of the worst

Feel free to contact me via profile.

Yes I'd agree with Jamie on that. Not all hosting packages are the same be they space or servers.

If you have any sort of applicaiton on there I would say you will need to make sure you can get physical access.

Maybe as the experiences he has had, hasnt been as 'reassuring' as to the level of competency of the 'technical staff', if there were any etc.

Some places only have staff there 9-5, so if you need a reboot, or someone to wander over and press 'YES', or F1 to continue, you have to wait till they have staff in (bugger at 6pm friday!) so if you have access yourself, you could wander in.

OR

Just go with a host who has multiple members of staff on 24/7/365 instead.
