He can't get on PH - (again)

Mr Graham J is having trouble again, I took this from a conversation on Messenger - does anyone know what he can do to sort it?

I can access MSN messenger perfectly OK but when I try to look at a page on the internet (PistonHeads, my hotmail account - which has 8 emails on - and even WindowsUpdate) I just get The page cannot be displayed.

I've rebooted about 5 times and it still hasn't solved it, I've checked my Firewall and thats fine, any ideas????

I've downloaded Mozilla as a temporary measure but would still like to get internet explorer sorted.

I've removed it from the Add/Remove Programs section of control panel but still have the icon on the desktop and the little shortcut bit at the bottom.

When I try to re-install IE it says that I already have it and should exit setup.

Have you tried Explorer repair or System Restore?

Are you using a regular home PC, or a corporate laptop (running Win ME, probably not). If you select 'Internet Options' from the 'Tools' menu in IE, select the 'Connections' tab and click 'LAN Settings' do you have a Proxy Server set?

Have you tried deleting your temporary internet files and/or internet history? Could be something corrupting things in there, but unlikely.

One more thing to try - what happens if you put http://213.52.163.118/ into your browser?

Home PC, no proxy server set - Oh I use NTL broadband which is a USB connection.

Had this problem with IE6 too. Basically could not resolve it.

Had to reinstall everything. Installed Netscape, but eventually even Outlook failed to access the internet.

No, system restore mucked the computer up last time and I had to use the backup disk.

I don't have the thing it suggests to use, just run system restore and it didn't help

Whilst computers are brilliant when they work, they're a right pain in the arse when they dont.

I think you need to save everything you can't re-install to CD/Disk/Spare HD and format the drive and re-install Windows (ideally not ME as it's a piece of sh*t).

Unfortunately I think you're right, thats going to be ALOT of disks (29 gig - but some can be disposed of)

I tried to do a master CD using the Master CD Creator a couple of days ago and it wouldn't have any of it, kept coming back with an error and wasted 4 CD's

If you're getting write errors on CD's drop the speed of the burner. (Some CD's don't write at the speed their supposed to).

If you are realy brave....format the hdd and do a total install, its a long proses, and you need to doulbe check u have all drivers. and ensure you back up anu data you need, i have formated my HDD at leat 4 times, due to programing requirements, as long as data is secure u will be fine, then concider partitioning your HDD with partition magic, create a partition just for your data, then if you ever need to format again you will not loose data..

it's tricky and will leave you with a scab on your head from all the sctatching involved....have fun..
