Just got an email from PDV6, he hasn't been able to log onto PH since the weekend. What is the sites "Ping" address?

He emailed me these instructions but ?I didn't understand them:

Open a DOS box (Start->Run "cmd" on Win2k, Start->Run "command" on Win98)
and at the C:> prompt type
ping pistonheads.com
and then press return

You should see a series of 'ping's (4 in total) stating "Reply from address>".
The IP address is a series of 4 numbers separated by full stops, e.g. the
BBC is 132.185.132.204

Its these IP address that the internet really works on, and the
user-friendly names (e.g. bbc.co.uk) are for us poor humans' benefit and are
translated into real IP addresses by DNS servers on the web.

I'd be interested to see what PH gives for you, in case the DNS server that
I am using is getting it wrong for some reason!

Can anyone help. Either stick the answer on here and I'll email him, or email him via his profile.

cheers

I've had trouble logging on recently.

Tell him to try the old URL

www.petrolheads.co.uk/gassing/

Exactly the same only you don't get the posting numbers on the left.

PS Pistonheads is (213.52.163.118)

He may also wish to check he hasn't got any invalid DNS server names hard coded in his TCPIP config as well. Usually your ISP supplies these as well as your IP address, but in some cases these may be hard coded and may in time become invalid.

Sorry if that was gibberish, but he should/might understand. Get him to mail me if he gets stuck.

Still no joy at work.

Greg, I reckon it must either be the ISA server or the ISP (Claranet), as I can't access PH from any machine at work.

Well bizzarre!

Actually, I think it must be a cunning ploy to try to get me to do some work...

Did you speak to the ISP, Pete?

Seems funny you can't access via IP address as well as DNS

Yep - spoke to the ISP this morning & they don't understand it. The only explanation they can come up with is if Ted is refusing connections from our IP address here.

I've mailed Ted to check, but I can't really see that being true (please say its not!) so I guess I'm back to square one.

Pete is getting the following error

HTTP 502 Proxy Error - Host is unreachable. For more information about this event, see ISA Server Help.(10065)

when he accesses any sites on my server.

I'm not blocking any IP addresses. The ISA server is administered by him and he's not done anything to conciously block the site.

Any ISA experts about?

Couple more ideas:

On the ISA server, check the contents of the LAT table and make sure PH isn't in there.

Can you reboot the ISA box? I assume you've tried that?

Good idea; hand't thought of that! Nothing unexpected in there, though.

Tried that - no effect.

A couple of questions / ideas:

Is content filtering enabled on ISA server?
Do you have internal DNS configured?
If so, do you also administer the DNS server?
What do the event / proxy / packet filter logs say?
Can you tracert to PH?

I'm wondering if it's maybe:
Looping back to internal DNS server?
Possible to grant yourself or user group specific access to PH site?

Also, I just noticed, nslookup returns pistonheads.com as an alias - can you access http://petrolheads1.pistonheads.co.uk/ instead?

When you ping pistonheads.com, do you obtain the same result as pinging its IP address, 213.52.163.118? A different result would indicate that it is a DNS error.

Thanks for the suggestions, but I'm sorry; I should have posted the results of various off-line discussions that have gone before:

There is no internal DNS.
ISP's DNS is ok, as pinging PH resolves to the correct IP.
There is no content or site filtering enabled at all.
Tracert can't get past the 1st hop to the ISA server.
Neither the ISA server itself or any of the machines on the network can access PH.
Can't access any other sites hosted on the same server as PH.
Can't access petrolheads1.pistonheads.co.uk or any other aliases that have been suggested.

Can't find anything of interest in any of the logs...

The weird thing is that this seemed to start hppening last Friday and nothing to my knowledge has changed in the setup here!

Could it be S/W rather than H/W?

Haven't got any "netnanny" type software running have you?

Could it be the "content" settings in IE?

Nope. No susch software installed and no such settings in i.e.

The problem hit all computers on the network simultaneously, so I reckon it must be either at the ISA server, ISP or Ted's end.

ISP claims its not them. Ted says its not him and, in any case, nobody else seems to have this problem. Therefore it must be the ISA server. However, nothing to my knowledge has changed!

Aaaaaargh!

Ah-ha: all evidence points to a Senior Management Directive upon discovering the degree of PH Gassing going on.

Hope you get it sorted somehow...

try

telnet pistonheads.com 80

then once its connected type

head / http1.1

the typing may well now 'show up' but its happening, make sure to type it as I said, with the spaces

you should end up with

HTTP/1.1 400 Bad Request
Server: Microsoft-IIS/5.0
Date: Fri, 27 Jun 2003 13:24:59 GMT
Content-Type: text/html
Content-Length: 87

ErrorThe parameter is incorrect. l>

Connection to host lost.

Or somthing similar

If you do, this means that there is nothing stopping you getting thru to PH route wise / PH's End.

your next step would be to look at your IE/Opera settings..

Also try from a different PC in the house/Work if you can.

If that fails, try from the PC thats connected directly to the net (possibly the proxy server your end)

Try disabling the proxy software etc.

If that fails..

Let me know ;P
