Well it's come again (said the actress to the bishop) - I've had the current PC for 5 and a bit years so it's time for a new one.

Has anyone any advice as to what to look for, where to buy, what not to go for and what to go for.

I'm going to be using it as a Home PC, for general house admin, it's going to need some sort of thingy to see pictures with/edit, a printer, but most of all it's got to rock with games and also be internet accessible for broadband. I want to try and future proof it for at least 3 to 4 years (is that possible nowadays?) and I want a new screen that doesn't take up as much room as the current 17inch monitor I've got.

I'm a great fan of playing online but I've given up for the moment as the modem just doesn't cut it when online against other bastards on broadband connections.

Can anyone help? Please?

Ahh, this topic has been done to death! (Trouble with only looking at General Gassing I'm afraid.) Sorry about that.

Do you mean a scanner, or imaage editing software?

, a printer, but most of all it's got to rock with games

what sort of games? 1st person 3D action games would need decent spec video card

and also be internet accessible for broadband.

Just needs to have a network card

I want to try and future proof it for at least 3 to 4 years (is that possible nowadays?)

nope! Sad but true. However, unless you keep adding hungrier and hungrier software, the same machine ought to last forever...

and I want a new screen that doesn't take up as much room as the current 17inch monitor I've got.

A TFT would save space, but possibly not the best option for fast 3D games.

Have you checked BB availability in your area?

Best bet might be to keep your existing screen & just buy the computer side of it. Go for a top of the range graphics card & almost top of the range processor (save many £££s but sacrifice little performance). Add a large hard disk if you're going to be doing a lot of photo/video editing & plenty of memory.

Shouldn't set you back too much & there's plenty of places to shop e.g.:

Try www.novatech.co.uk good machines at some of the best prices I can find.
Aftersales service is excellent too.
I'm not connected with them in any way, just a very satisfied customer.

I too would recommend Novatech, but you might want to give drop a line to Mike Fox of Fox computers he is quite cheap and does a great deal for a computer(s).

email: aqso35@dsl.pipex.com

He should be able to help you, he is based in Liverpool though.
