I use Gmail with the Apple Mail app on my MacBook and iPhone

When I send an email the recipient see's my real name as being the sender, instead of just my email address.
Is there a way of preventing my name being visible, so they just see my email address instead?

Just ask Google how to change your display name on Gmail but not your email address.

If you can not do it under the account settings in Apple Mail then you could try logging on to gmail through the web page - go to settings then select the Accounts and Import tab. It is under there (I just checked), but whether this will work with a 3rd party client I do not know.

To change the name people see when you email them, while keeping the same Gmail address:
Open Gmail on a computer.
Click the settings cog at the top right, then See all settings.
Open Accounts and Import (or Accounts).
Under Send mail as, click Edit info beside your address.
Enter the name you want and click Save changes.
Your email address stays the same.
Google says this setting can’t be changed in the Gmail app.

Thank you. Just had a look at those settings from within the Gmail web page and I can see how you can create a new email address to mask your genuine one, so that the recipient doesn't see my name or my actual email address.

Yesterday I managed to go to iCloud web page and after signing in there is an option to 'Hide my email address'. When doing that it generates a random set of words to mask your actual email address to recipients,

Also, after activating the option to 'hide my email' whilst I was in iCloud yesterday, I have now noticed that the i'm using the Mail app and composing a new email, when I hover over the 'From' email (set by default to my actual email address) it has a drop down box next to it and clicking this gives me the option to hide my email address from the recipient, and replaces it with the randomly generated email address that was created during the iCloud process above.
