Deregister amazon fire stick - still useful?

I have an old amazon fire tv device, if I deregister it from amazon can it still be used to stream local media on my network.

A bit googling varies from device is useless unless connected to amazon to it might keep any apps, etc.

Any thoughts or experiences.
