whatsapp not loading - iphone

i appreciate this isn't tech support but was wondering if anyone can help before i go join another forum etc.

iphone 16 pro, ios 18.7.1, no updates outstanding.

whatsapp won't open. it is working on my laptop, and i am getting alerts on my phone, but the app itself will not open. it is hanging and then crashing on this screen



this has only been a problem since this morning.

yesterday i had a whatsapp call from an iranian number which i answered as i thought it was one of my contractors. the call hung up on answering and i thought nothing of it, only now wondering if this might be a factor or simply coincidence.

anyway i force closed and reopened the app, same issue. i then offloaded it and reinstalled, same issue.

i then updated ios [security updates, to version above], rebooted, offloaded and reinstalled again, same issue.

wondering what to do next? google is only advising the same things i've done already.

solved:

backed up the phone, completely deleted and reinstalled WA. net result is it works i just lost any messages received today.

Well, good you solve it.
Did you just try deleting WA, rebooting, then downloading again?
I had a weird one with Google Maps opening them bombing out last week. Reboot didn’t fix it, so I deleted and reinstalled: all fine.

Yes tried that a few times, offloading rather than deleting all data, rebooting between each step.

I was concerned over when the last backup was and potentially losing a lot of work stuff on WA for web (for better or worse as it’s bloody stupid that they use WA for work channels). In the end no dramas.
