No. If you delete the cloud version it will normally delete versions everywhere as it's all in sync.

Not sure why you object to the cloud backup If you switch phones, phone breaks, gets lost etc. you can easily restore your photos. Without cloud backup (unless you're doing it some other way) then it'll all be lost.

All my Google stuff syncs so just be careful. As I say, so long as you have set up your Google account securely, no reason not to back up there.

Camera photos are auto uploaded to Google Photos (you can turn this off if you want via phone settings on the google account options). You can remove files from Google Photos and they will remain on your phone. It used to be a 2-way synch but Google stopped this some time ago. Google Drive will delete cloud and desktop files if they are synched.

Although as I discovered the other day, it seems that if you create an album in the google photos phone app and move stuff into it then it ignores all your other preferences and uploads those files to google drive anyway...

Following this up, I had a quick search for this issue in frustration and have discovered that there is another app available called Google Gallery, which is simple gallery app without all the online nonsense - result!

For my own entertainment, could you please confirm if you have other Google products that may have screensavers?

My Chromecast and nest hub show some lovely curated photos from the cloud and if yours are of the nature it seems, I can imagine a few awkward moments hehe

Removing a file from Photos on my Chromebook definitely deletes it from my phone as well.
