I fancy one of these but they have been around for a long time: does anyone know of rumours that they might be replaced or upgraded in the near future?

I have 5 of them across two properties. They’re brilliant, do exactly what they say on the tin.

The SoC on them is basically the same as in the Switch (which is why it might have lasted so long, almost unchanged). It could be that when the Switch 2 comes out, they will make a new Shield but no guarantees.

Even though the guts of the system have changed very little since 2015 (there was a relatively minor SoC upgrade in 2019 which brought it in line with the Switch) it's still one of the best set top boxes out there. It's my main source of digital entertainment on the TV and has been since around 2017 when I bought the original 2015 box on sale. Since then I've got the 2017 and then the 2019 boxes and all have been excellent. Support has been amazing - there have been regular OS updates even on the 2015 hardware.

Downsides are limited onboard RAM and storage (not that big a deal for what is basically a streaming box) and even the latest model does not support VP9v2 which is what youtube uses for HDR, so no HDR videos from youtube. It will play HDR encoded in other codecs though.

I use a 2019 version to feed a projector and 55inch TV. No issues running 4k, HDR with GeForce Now. I recently got the official controller for it as Bluetooth controllers are always flaky.
