My S21 is starting to feel a little tired (mainly the battery) and I'm considering a Flip 6 - for the next couple of days I appear to be able to get a new 512gb model for £799 which I think is an excellent price.

Just slightly concerned that I'm not going to get a solid 3+ years out of it as foldable screen tech is still a bit new.

Did anyone on PH get one when it came out last year and can comment on your experience?

Yup I have one. Been very good. Had the previous two generations too and both screen protectors split and I had to remove. Not a functionality issue BTW. The6 either doesn't have one or is much more robust.

Battery life is good, but not quite as good as the equivalent normal phone format.

Will be passing down to the wife to get the 7 when it appears.

Wife has one too. Despite her dropping it almost nightly, sitting on it or crushing it by sleeping on it, it still works fine.

The Nissan Micra or Honda Jazz of phones - hard to kill!

Id spend less or get it fully insured. I got through 2 moto razor 40s within a few months. I've now just replaced the screen on the 40 ultra, we will see how long that lasts.

1st one I sat on (closed). Green line and black blob.
2nd one I got ONE grain of sand behind the screen - totally buggered.

Sure, both failed from careless use , but they failed SO easily. When the ultra failed with sand (took it to the beach in a ziplock bag, made no odds) I got out my trusty backup xiomi note 10 and it soldiered on through two months daily beach use without a hiccup.

My mate is a phone repair guy and he said the Galaxy and the moto suffer the same problems and should be avoided. He could not stress this enough.

If you want a flip, and the ARE fab, id recommended a moto razor 40 ultra. You can get them new on ebay for £350 or online for £380 professionally refurbed. You can get the non ultra brand new for £380 on amazon

No way on gods earth would I drop £799 on one.

Thanks guys, sounds reassuring on some counts.

In terms of a moto, I like the look of that but unfortunately for better or worse I'm sort of locked in the Samsung eco system with the watch, galaxy book etc.

I'm considering maybe taking out the Samsung care if I go for it to see how I get on.

Also, forgot to add, I can get the 256gb for £719 but the 511 for an extra 80 quid seems a bargain.

What do they offer over a normal phone apart from more fragility?

Good question but reviewers seem to enjoy them, the form factor is much better than a slab phone, and to be honest I just think I'd enjoy hanging up on people by clapping the phone shut.

Some actual practical benefits are being able to review notifications on the outer screen apparently helps to prevent you getting stuck in a doom scroll of social media, and doing things like taking pictures/video is good (it basically forms its own camera stand, and you can use the "front" camera for selfies too)

I guess it could turn out to be a bit of a gimmick but it does look pretty.

My wife has a 6, we both had 4s and 5s. We will never go back to a surfboard.

Screen protectors crack and need replacement, however this is free and the second one, since it is laid on a slightly bent screen, rather than a brand new flat one, does not suffer the same fate.

Across five Samsung Flip phones, we have only ever had free screen protectors, no other issues.

People still comment as if they're a new thing, but I guess when Apple eventually sell one that will stop. laugh

100% get one. You won't regret it.

Samsung care may not be required if you have it covered on your house insurance. When the screen of my S23U broke, NFU covered it (£210) with a £50 excess.

I have a galaxy watch - makes no difference, just so you know.

+1.

I moved from Samsung phone to Oneplus because I wanted a folding phone and didn't like the form factor of the Samsung.

It still works perfectly with my watch (I think there is one specific function that doesn't, but I can't remember what it is) - the health stuff all works, notifications work etc.

- A LOT more screen real estate for the same size. When I unfold mine it's a chunk longer than my regular Moto with the same width screen. Like a whole row of icons, at least.
- Pocketability - fits in a trouser pocket much better than a regular phone.
- You can pay contactles with it closed - side fingerprint unlock, so you take it out your pocket, your finger has already unlocked it, no need to open it. Less faff than a regular phone - I've got a lovely moto edge 50 neo as a stand in whilst I repaired the Razr, and its a real step back having to screen-fingerprint unlock every time you need to use it, or pay for things. Ergonomically its such a win, particularly with side fingerprint. (if you face-unlock your Android phone you have to finger print verify every contactless payment - I assume its the same for Apple? - banks won't accept face unlock as secure - understandable really!)

Fragility - yep! - that's the price you pay. But the ergonomics are perfect - takes you back to when phones were compact, but you still have the huge screen now.

I love the form enough that I've now put a brand new (excellent) Moto 50 Edge Neo to the side having mended the Razr.

The screen replacing process was fun! (cost me £130 in parts all in - AMOLED, sticker packs, replacement charging PCB (I broke a tiny sma connector on it during dissasembly)

The S21 is such a brilliant phone but storage drove me mad eventually, as well as aging battery. I was really tempted by a Flip 6. I went to the Samsung store to check it out.
Came away with a S24. Brilliant so far. Actually a tiny bit smaller than the S21.

The Flip 6 just seemed too much of a novelty.

I haven't found the Z Flips fragile at all. I renovate property and am always crawling about in lofts or up ladders with it in my pocket and my bodyweight on top of it and never had a problem.

The screen is protected from everything, so if anything I'd say with a decent case they're probably more robust than a surfboard.

As I found out, with both, that the screen is vulnerable from behind, not its surface. Might be different with the build of the Galaxy - better protected.

No, they aren’t robust. Lots of horror stories across the web.

Not sure what they are for to be honest. I’d much rather have 2 slabs. Small slab for a phone and a large slab for a tablet. Generally these are robust enough to be retired due to old age, not because the screen has started delaminating or a speck of dust is causing the display to go crazy.

You just need to look on ebay at Moto and Galaxy flips - any of them with a reasonable price have screen defects and its always either black blobs (they grow) or green lines, or cracked folds.

Anyone saying they are "robust" has been either lucky, or they are unusually careful, or keep them in good protective cases all the time. I've broken two regular phones in all my adult life, and that was dropping on gravel. Most of my phones get retired due to upgrades. I got through 2 flips in a few months. They are stupidly fragile compared to "slab" phones.

Saying they are "robust" is just daft tbh and simply reflects one anecdotal experience. Go in feet first if you wish, but, please, be aware, they are absolutely NOT anywhere as near as robust as regular phones.

OK, I'm going to find out for myself, a 512Gb model is on order and should arrive tomorrow. It has a 2 year warranty and insurance can take care of any accidental damages.

My S21 is only valued at £65 on trade in because it has screen burn so I'm just going to keep it as a back up phone rather than dispose of it for a pittance.

Just to update this - it's arrived and I spent hours setting it up yesterday.

Feels very solid to me, the hinge isn't flimsy at all, I've bought a case for it too just to help protect the aluminium but it actually felt pretty robust.

Have to say I love it!

Quite enjoy ending calls by closing it shut, and the galaxy AI features like note taking and call translation are interesting. Although it's attempts to summarise a meeting I had today were utterly hopeless. It's like it can only summarise 30 seconds of the call at a time, so my "summary" ended up about 100 paragraphs long!

In use the phone is slightly more snappy than my S21 even just doing my usual doom scrolling, and I did notice I did less of that today when it was folded shut on my desk. I've got Good Lock installed and was using the cover screen to read notifications and Whatsapps without actually opening the phone.

Battery life is good, with 23% remaining now having started at 100% around 8am.

Overall, very, very happy with it cloud9
