Have a Lenovo T50 on its way with Windows 11.

Do I just use the free Office 365 or is it worth paying for it?

Buy Office 24 for around £20. I did, this very morning, for a new (to me) Thinkpad.

Why any home user would commit to annual subs is an absolute mystery to me.

No home user is ever going to notice the different functionality between office 2019 and office 2024. 99.9999% of users use Excel, Word, and, maybe, outlook.

Would add ecokeys to the suggested alternatives.

Isn’t it worth it for the 1TB per user online storage?

If you need that - I guess so.

Personally, I use the free google storage for photos, and backups, and the free dropbox for portable data/docs.

It was cheaper than Google One for 1Tb of storage, ignoring that you get all the Office stuff thrown in. If you took the Family Subscription on your works Home Use Programme it was £5 a month and you could with a little thought utilise 6 Users x 1Tb if you needed more space.

Price went up a decent chunk just recently though, apparently because Copilot things are coming for Home Users. Depending on how that plays out it could be the cheapest way to access Office, Cloud Storage and AI stuff. If you have 6 people in your family all using it then it is probably very cheap still.

I'm used to 365 and its online storage through work. Now retired I need to switch (at the moment still have work access!) but must admit I'm a little nervous of going al in with Microsoft for storage on a personal basis as you do hear stories of people having their accounts locked.

Use Gmail for personal email so not tied Microsoft for email.

Indeed - I guess families (large) are a special case - but only if you need all that cloud storage.

6 people with CD keys = approx £65, one off.

6 people on MS 365 = £105 for life.

I do understand that (maybe?) kids need the latest versions, but for most people it really makes no odds at all.

You have to be pretty committed to cloud storage and being on the latest Office to go from £65 or so as a one off, to at least, £105 a year for life. (it will of course go up). I was rather suprised when I saw people on here complaining about the price hike - had no idea anyone would agree to it and not just buy a CD key

Office 2024 Pro Plus for £22?

https://www.gamekeydiscounter.co.uk/microsoft/micr...

Office 2019 is still being updated if you wanted an older version.

But as per other comments, when you can buy an up to date standalone version for £25 why would you pay £70 a year or whatever O365 costs, unless you desperately need the cloud storage?

With these versions you may need to activate by phone, but aside from that you'll see no difference to any other Office software.

I use LibreOffice.

Give it a try it won't cost you anything but your time.

I did look at it, but Pro plus 2021 was £11 or so , so I just went in that direction.

Why are you all fussing about cloud storage?

If it's so important you really need a backup, just copy it to another computer... very little will be that important.

Sure, Industry Practice is a 3:2:1 but you're not a business.

Cloud storage is very good for accessing stuff from multiple devices of course (four in my case), and sharing with others. For me it's worth the Office subscription just for Onedrive. (I pay £7.99/month as whilst it isn't publicised, there is a subscription without Copilot). I have 950Gb on Onedrive so whilst there are free options out there, there aren't any that give that much storage.

Following earlier advice here I bought from Ecokeys. I had a small issue yesterday and their tech team responded immediately with the solution I needed.
