HP Hub/Monitor problem

I have just bought an HP Pavilion laptop, monitor and docking hub.

All works well if the monitor's connected to the laptop but the monitor won't connect if I plug it into the hub. All the other connections on the hub work just fine so the hub's connected OK to the laptop, so what am I doing wrong?.

What cable and ports are you using to connect the laptop to the hub and what cable and ports are you using to connect the hub to the monitor?

It's a HP Pavillion laptop and a HP G5 hub wiith a USB c lead just purchased from HP Neither the monitor or the keyboard/mouse will work if plugged into the hub and the monitor says "no input signal".
I have brought the hub round to my son's house and he can't bet his monitor to work either. We think the hub's defective.
