Full Fibre Broadband?
Discussion
Just had to ring Sky as my broadband has been utter crap of late with dropouts, been trying to restore a large database this morning and every time I get everything ready it conks out ffs.
Couldnt get the customer services, all routes seem to lead to some crap virtual assistant or steps that seem fine when I try them.
Anyway, interesting bit was I rang and they offered Fibre Broadband and for as long as I can remember we couldnt have it down our road as it wasnt cabled.
Have noticed some blokes with a cherry picker messing with the phone wires so 2 and 2 together makes me think they changed something, was assuming FTTP would be underground and require digging the pavement up ? Or can they now do it via the overhead wires ?
So, quite excited to get Fibre, just not sure what they need to do to enable it, apparently an OpenReach engineer will visit and put something on the outside and then the Sky engineer will wire it in.
Anyone got any insights to whats changed, is it just new cables via the overhead wires ?

Overhead is a thing for FTTP.
I'm with YouFibre, using the Netomnia(?) infrastructure, and there was no need to dig up anything. Just one cable from the telecoms pole in the road to the house, then down to grey box on the outside. Another cable from the grey box into the house and finally into a modem. The new router is connected to that.
Installation was all done in about 45 mins.

I had fibre from the pole a couple of months ago.
Much more preferable to having a set of chimps make a ham fisted hash of digging our front up to run a fibre to the termination point in the pavement. Some of the installs of that I've seen have been abysmal, it would be the work of moments to vandalise an exposed fibre optic.
It was similar to having copper fitted tbh. He ran the fibre through the side of our garage and into one of the bedrooms as that was the easiest and best solution for all concerned.
Our previous copper line went to the top of the gable end of our bungalow but they can't do that now due to elf and safety as they wouldn't go into the loft, and have to drill holes into the wall to fix the ladders to if they're going to work at height so I went for an easier solution.

Just trying to plan it out, the router is in the kitchen under some units where all the network cables go in so cant change that so preparing to avoid messy cables or issues on the 25th when Sky install it.
They said Openreach with install a box on the side of our wall where the phone line comes in, customer splice point or CSP, which is the fibre optic cable coming into the house.
Then Sky will install am ONT (Optical Network Terminal) on the inside of the house, after drilling a home and running the fibre cable in, the ONT is basically a fibre optic to Ethernet converter, that needs power to work as well.
Bit I am wondering about is with the router in the kitchen, I need to get yet another RJ45 cable through to it, which involves going under the floor and popping a cable up at the router and terminating it, but not sure where they will bring the cable intot he house or can I plan that and tell them what I want them to do, thinking into the attached garage. Alternatively there is a hub in there, could I just run a cable into that which connects back to the hub ? Does the ONT need to connect to any specific port on the Sky Hub or is it basically just another ethernet connection like any other ?

Speed was ok for us before, but has got really unreliable, ironically since they messed with the cables !

Where is your OpenReach master socket now? The ONT is usually installed in the same location. They said Openreach with install a box on the side of our wall where the phone line comes in, customer splice point or CSP, which is the fibre optic cable coming into the house.

I didn't have fibre before, just FTTC and it got very unreliable over the last few months of having it.Speed was ok for us before, but has got really unreliable, ironically since they messed with the cables !
No problems whatsoever with the fibre. I get about 220/30 which is plenty for the both of us.
We had MJ Quinn do our install and the installer was brilliant. They will more or less run the fibre to where you want providing it's a reasonable request and they don't have to go miles.
We had all sorts of issues with trees on the road the like but they ran the fibre through the air from the pole to the corner of our garage so it bisects next doors drive which they didn't mind. I was very happy with the result.
I always hop on to these threads and suggest taking a look at home 5g broadband.
Not for everyone by any means, but worth investigating. I have Three 5g and get a consistent 200mb/s download and 100mb/s upload. Cost is £21/month now for unlimited data. Not up to the very fastest that fibre can offer, but still very fast when all is said and done.
No wires to the house is a bonus as well.

When I had mine done they were happy to go down the side of the house and run it into the loft where it drops down to my 'network cupboard' rather than downstairs where the master socket was. The input on the sky hub is marked.
Have since switched from Sky to Community Fibre. Forget the 5g suggestion...

I've had Openreach in today to get from fibre to cabinet to full fibre. I'm in an upstairs flat so had a new wire connected from the telegraph pole, and a new Openreach box in the wall with the EE hub plugged into it. I was with Plusnet on fibre to cabinet and the contract was coming up for renewaland, I did intend to switch over to EE to cabinet, but EE only do full fibre to new customers, after checking it was possible to connect to the flat I went with it, going from around 70mbps with Plusnet to 500mbps with EE, I could have gone to 900 or 1.6, but those levels are a bit more spendy. Going to EE is more for the phone side of things, 5G in Wrexham is only with EE, and they do the 'EE One' combo discount on mobile and broadband, so later this year when the O2 phone contract is up, I'll be switching.
So far so good on the broadband, I'm getting 500 and my landline phone plugs into the hub router and keeps my old phone number.

I have to say I'm surprised to hear that someone under 100 and with full fibre broadband to boot still has one at home. Ditched mine 20 years ago.the-norseman said:
I've got a 900/900 cityfibre connection and still have a landline, I'm 36.
At the time when we moved in neither of our networks (wife and me) supported wifi callingo on our phones, they do now and we use it, so once were out of contract bye bye landline.
Ok, so a quick check of your profile can I presume you're somewhere in Sweden that doesn't have mobile coverage? Ignoring that edge case, what is the point of a landline for everyone else?At the time when we moved in neither of our networks (wife and me) supported wifi callingo on our phones, they do now and we use it, so once were out of contract bye bye landline.

Nope I'm in the UK, In one of the new cities. No 5gb round, here, just 4g and thats 5mbits/sec/
Been planning where I want stuff, will pull a new cable through from the router to the garage and get them to put the box in there, just means diving under the floor and digging out my network tools which is always a joy, but can get it put in and tested before they arrive so should be a nice easy install, the router is in an awkward position really right in the middle of the house under a cupboard, actually may look at moving it, got three and a bit weeks.
Will they pull a face if its just a normal cat 5 cable or dont they care ?

Do you have to be so offensive to construct workers? Calling them Chimps. You are very wrong.
