Domains hosted by TSOhost moved to 123-reg; email forwarding
Discussion
So I have 3 domains registered with TSOhost, just used to do catch all email forwarding to separate GMail accounts.
A few months ago I received an email saying that everything was being transferred to 123-reg ownership (a little put out as I transferred away from 123-reg a few years ago, but OK) - don’t worry as the process will be transparent and seamless,
Recently received an email saying I need to change my MX records in the next couple of days or email forwarding will break - so much for transparent and seamless.
Just went to update it and the help info isn’t very specific - it tells me I update them to one of two things depending on whether I have a Generation 1 or Generation 2 mailbox, with no info on how to work out what I’ve got.
All I can find out from Google is that GMail isn’t either as it’s its own thing. Which doesn’t help me. So which do I do?
A side worry, during my googling I saw something saying that 123-reg no longer support free blanket email forwarding for the domain. This is a massive problem for me as I use many different email addresses within the domain. Is this true? If so I am seriously hacked off that I’ve been palmed off with a serviced that isn’t like for like, not to mention I am wasting my sunday evening messing about with this
What is the domain hosting company du jour?

More research has shown that 123-reg do not support catch-all email forwarding which is an absolute deal breaker for me as I use many, many different email addresses within the domain, so it now becomes a case of how quickly can I transfer my domain to a new hosting company, and who do I use?
A quick bit of research on here saw Google Domains recommended but I see they sold it off a couple of years ago.
Have seen mythic beasts recommended on here a couple of times who seem as good as any. I don’t need any email mailboxes, any hosting - all I need is registration of 3 domains, with catchall email forwarding to gmail accounts (a separate one for each domain). Just want something reliable where I won’t get dicked about and decent support (and to get it up and running by Wednesday so I don’t lose any emails).
Thanks!

PHers were recommending TSO and Krystal at one point IIRC.
Yeah I liked TSOhost until they foisted me on 123-reg who don’t provide me with the service I was already paying for. Ironically I left 123-reg for TSOhost a few years back as they were crap!I’ve seen Krystal recommended for hosting before but I don’t really need that…. Will check them out though.
My views on 123-reg (i.e. they are now s
te and their tech support is shocking):

Gen 1 and Gen 2 refers to mail servers you buy from them, so if you only have a domain with email forwarding, that does not apply.

I had a similar issue recently, been with 123 for a few years for my domain and email forwarder to Gmail. They changed their products so they no longer have a simple email forwarder included with the domain cost - that's now part of their Email Pro package or somesuch and while not a huge sum in and of itself it's a lot more than my annual domain registration fee. I posted here and a few folk recommended Cloudflare, they have a free registration option which includes some email forwarding - worth a look to see if it fits your requirements and Cloudflare seem to be very well respected. Ultimately I ended up going a different route for other reasons but Cloudflare definitely looked like a good alternative to 123-reg.
Interestingly I had a reply from mythic beasts that recommends collecting email by POP3/IMAP rather than forwarding as it is more reliable (difficult to distinguish forwarded emails from spam). Are they suggesting getting a mailbox with them and collecting my mail with GMail that way?
Is there any truth to this? I have had a suspicion that not all my emails were coming through for a while.

I also am moving from TSO/123. I've used Fastmail for email for years and they recommended iwantmyname.com to me for registrations. They've been great so far, very helpful with support queries getting stuff set up and transferred. I have some domains with them already and will move the rest over this year.
OK, just to update this - I got stuck in last night.
I did things in a slightly topsy turvy way - mythic-beasts has a wizard that looks at your domain and tells you what needs doing. It was a bit confusing though, steps that included going back to your previous domain holder to change things didn’t work as the domains had already disappeared when I got to that point. Also I forgot to do some steps (there was a time length that you had to change to update more frequency but I din’t for some reason - I was tired and got sidetracked).
So I transferred in my domains (which I don’t think I actually had to do but I wanted to get as far from 123-reg as possible) which is what sidetracked me from the wizard which didn’t actually mention it. First panic was 123-reg saying it would take up to 5-7 days to update the IPSTAG. Having said that it was almost instantaneous. Was very difficult to find the right page on the 123-reg control panel and the help guide is very confusing. Once that was done, mythic-beasts was quite helpful - DNS records updated, nameservers updated. Created a mailbox for each domain, main email address goes into there and catchall can also be sent there which works OK.
Seemed to take a while to propagate, one of my work email addresses steadfastedly refused to go to the mailbox and was still going to my gmail address (presumably something somewhere was still pointing to 123-reg/TSOhosts servers, but this morning it cautiously seems to be working.
I have to say though, as a relatively intelligent and computer literate person it is a complete minefield and so confusing. I’m still not sure it is all right, I have done as much testing from different addresses as I can and it seems OK, but who knows if I am missing mail…
THe jury is still out on whether I needed the mailbox rather than the forwarding - could be a nice bit of upselling by the host company (and it seems I still have to pay £15 a year just for email forwarding which has always been free for me before with the registration of the domain…
The final part of the puzzle is how to get that mailbox into my gmail account. Tech support told me to set up Gmail to download it which I have done - however it is only POP3 and it takes several minutes for email to come through - not very satisfactory for time sensitive stuff. Also, my outgoing emails are going through GMails servers rather than the mystic-beasts. Not sure if this is a problem but seems untidy.
So, anybody any idea how I can set it up to pull my mail down using IMAP or something? Googling just gets me info on how to use IMAP to get emails from gmail which is not what I want.
Or will I end up just going back to simple forwarding from mystic-beasts (who claim its unreliable as forwarded email and spam is difficult to differentiate - although I’m not aware of having had too may problems before…)
Sorry if this is garbled, literally up until 3.30am trying to make sure it was working

I had no problem with moving domains just by using the settings check stuff on Mythic Beasts - apart from not waiting long enough for cache's etc to be refreshed, which MB fixed for me quickly by flushing.
I don't understand your issue with the mailbox though. Surely the ability to use IMAP is an option when you set the mailbox up in your mailbox client? Mine is IMAP, and it's simply part of the account settings in my email client (I don't use Gmail as an app though).
ETA :
I just tried adding one of my Mythic Beasts email accounts to my Gmail app :
Setup email : I chose other
Entered my email address
Next page asks me if the account is POP3 or IMAP.
So surely you just select IMAP here?
Or are you using a different mail app? (Although I'd expect them all to have an option for IMAP)

I was using the settings page of the gmail webpage rather than an app - interesting that they offer an IMAP option. Are you sure that's not to download your GMail mail to a separate client? I find links on how to do that, but general searching suggests that using gmail to download mail from a separate mailbox is a POP3 only affair, with lots of people complaining that it takes up to an hour and there is no way of refreshing more quickly. Mythic Beasts admin suggested as much.
As a result I think I will probably go back to forwarding. I know they said it was an issue distinguishing spam from forwarded mail, but it's been working for me for the 25 years or so I've had the domain, and mythic-beasts have an SRS (sender rewriting scheme(!)) that apparently makes it look less like spam. I am trying it out on my mother in law's domain first
It is a bit disappointing though as I've signed up for mailboxes I'm not going to be using, and even forwarding has a cost which I haven't had to pay for before. I've been very impressed with mythic-beasts and their support so far, but it is a shame that the forwarding costs.

No, it's definitely downloading to the same client. You simply have multiple accounts on the same app and use IMAP for each account.
I changed apps recently and both the old one and the new one do that.
Gmail would too if I wanted to use it.
I must be misunderstanding what you're trying to do, because using multiple email accounts for an app - and using IMAP for each - is completely normal.

If my email is being delivered to an external mailbox (at mythic-beasts), ideally I'd like it pushed to gmail, or for gmail to check it frequently. For completeness I would have preferred mail then to be sent from gmail via the mythic-beasts servers so that the headers are nice and clean - I still sometimes get email replies sent to my gmail address rather than my domain email address which is annoying, and can't establish why occasionally the reply-to stuff seems to get set up wrong.
In order to set it up I have gone into GMail settings -> Accounts & Import -> Check email fro other accounts using a web browser (Chrome if it makes a difference). I can't see any settings of this detail on the GMail app on my iphone or ipad.
In there I only have the option to check a server via POP3, there isn't an IMAP option. There was no option to set up SMTP for sending emails.
Google (and support) are telling me that there is no way to improve the download refresh.
As a result I just set up my MIL's email to forward directly which works as you would expect.
Here's where it gets weird: I just set up a POP3 download for her to pull down the few emails she's received over the last couple of days, and this time there was a second page where I could make emails appear to come from domain and give it a SMTP server to send outgoing emails to!! Definitely wasn't shown that page when I set up the other 2 accounts a couple of days ago!

Strange - maybe apps have more options than the web access.
I have multiple accounts - Hotmail, outlook, Gmail and my own domains. With pretty much any app I decided to use, I can configure account settings - Gmail, Hotmail, outlook are automatic (although I could do it manually if I choose I suppose) and are IMAP.
My domain mailboxes on mythic beasts I setup manually - again IMAP, and I configure the server address - including the mythic beasts SMTP for sending.
I assumed web access would be as configurable, if not more (you can configure stuff in outlook web that you can't in the app), but I guess not.

I was too caught out by the changes in terms at 123-Reg and lost the email forwarding as of 1st Feb.
I have signed up for the free email forwarding service at ImprovMX and was back up and running almost immediately.
My email setup has become reactive rather than properly considered:
Domain is up for renewal with 123-Reg in November and will definitely transfer administration elsewhere. I have no website presence and do not expect to gain such a requirement.
Will be watching the forum for recommendations / feedback on domain companies.

My email setup has become reactive rather than properly considered:
- Moved to full fibre with Squirrel Internet from BT, so migrated from BT POP mailboxes to Gmal IMAP
- Moving from BT meant that I had to find a SMTP service, so (following a recommendation on here) set up with Zoho
- The changes at 123-Reg have now brought in an additional party to forward email

Just had a nightmare with a customer and 123reg (migrated from TSOHost)
They didn't renew - no problem I will just renew and that will be that
Except that they have enabled 2FA via email - without permission or any kind of warning beforehand - so the 2FA code goes nowhere
So have go through the account recovery process
They are slow, beligerent and unhelpful - you cannot speak to them and you cannot escalate a complaint, depsite it stating that you can in the terms and conditions
Avoid at all costs
