It has this
https://www.scan.co.uk/products/8gb-(1x8gb)-corsai...

I bought this - Crucial Pro DDR4 RAM 64GB Kit (2x32GB) 3200MHz, Intel XMP 2.0, Computer Memory (PC) - CP2K32G4DFRA32A
https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B0C29W4G29?ref=ppx_yo2...

To go into this:
Asus STRIX Z370-G + i7 8700

The manual for the mobo says it supports max 64GB supports XMP

I've tried various slots, 1 DIMM and both DIMMS, enabling/disabling XMP, going to default bios but it still won't post. Put the old RAM back in and it fires up.

With the new RAM when in Bios it shows it with the correct capacity and speed etc in the correct slot - so it recognises it. Just won't post !

What the heck have I got wrong?

Worth a BIOS/firmware update and then either reset or pop out the CMOS battery. XMP is pretty flakey IME and the first tip is always latest firmware.

There are lots of search results for "Asus STRIX Z370-G i7 8700 will not POST 64GB" but I can't see your exact case.

All the specs I could find say they are compatible. Having been caught out before I would have bought more of the exact same sticks, or filled all 4 slots from the start.

Can you return them and just buy more Corsair Vengeance LPX? These, I think -

Did you note what BIOS version you were on originally? Glancing at the BIOS archive, version 0614 states " Improve memory compatibility." I wonder if the original BIOS didn't support 32GB DIMMs?

No - would have been from when I first bought and built it as have had no need to touch it since then.
