You know you can just hold down the shift key to type a cap.. you don't need to caps on, key, caps off.

And no, no special reason, sounds like the keyboard or LED behind that key is faulty. If you have warranty left on it, raise it with Dell support.

My old boss used to do that with his one finger typing. Bang the caps lock, bang the letter, bang the caps lock.

How many people can remember that it used to be harder to press the shift key than the others because it had to lift (shift, I suppose...) the entire carriage up?

(Hence shift lock was physically quite a relief!)

Yep.
I know plenty of people who enable and disable the caps lock just to type one capital.

There's also settings in "Ease of Use" in windows that allows you to do notifications and sound when pressing a "toggle key" (caps, num or scroll lock).

One thing you could do if you really want an indicator is install something like traystatus.
The free version will then show your lock key status in the system tray (next to the clock) on your machine.
