iCloud storage question

Hi all, new iPhone user here.

On Android, as long as my phone had storage capacity any images received on WhatsApp would automatically go into my photo gallery. I’ve just tried doing this on the iPhone and I’m getting a message saying my iCloud storage is full.

I have loads of storage space on the phone, is this just a way of Apple extracting some more cash or am I doing it wrong? Cheers

Basically yes if you want backups of what's on your phone which most people do.

It's cheap enough.
