Changing phone and Whatsapp message history

Tech question relating to Whatsapp.

I have a new phone but I am going to place the existing SIM into the new phone. Will my Whatsapp message history be retained or will all conversation effectively start from scratch? I suspect whatsapp saves them to the phone not the cloud but can't work out if that is the case.

Just wondering how I can transition and retain message history!

I would imagine it is held in the cloud as you can have Whatsapp across PC, Mac, Phones etc etc.

Never had a problem when changing phone/carrier.

You have to backup Whatsapp first to a cloud service ie Icloud for Apple or Google Drive for Android.

When you then login on the new phone it will then ask you to download that backup.

This is done in settings, chats, chats backup.
