We're thinking of getting a tablet for my partners eight year old for kids YouTube and suchlike.

I had an old iPad (2012ish) that we tried and that didn't play the new apps (or kids YouTube).

Looking at secondhand as it will end up broken and proberly from CEX.

Needs to have good parental controls.

What would be the youngest iPad we could get? Other half likes Apple and I don't think I'll get her to swab to Samsung or something.

iPad 7th gen is the oldest iPad that will still run the latest iOS18. That might drop off the supported list next year or the year after however. Should still run most apps for another few years.

Biggest issue about getting an older iPad like that is the battery might be on its way out. I always buy brand new or practically new manufacturer refurbished items for this reason.

In my experience the best tablet for an 8 year old is a mild sleeping pill... smile

My 8 year old has an 9th Generation iPad, his little brother has a 10th Generation, which is better, and has a USB-C connector, rather than Lightning. The parental controls are good.

Amazon Fire Kids Pro edition might be worth a look.

2 year "worry free" warranty ... if it breaks, they replace it for free.

iPad every time, irrespective of the kids age, in my opinion.

We once made the mistake of buying those Amazon Fire Kids tablets, and they were the biggest pile of cheap crap junk ever. Sent them back to Amazon for a refund and bought iPads. The difference in well, everything, is night and day.

iPad mini 4 or 5 will be sufficient if you want something cheap... (5 supports the original Pencil)

We've done pretty well out of iPad Mini 1st Gen's though considering how old they are now - original batteries still giving hours of use and they do run YouTube Kids - you just have to use an older version of the app. Screens also a bit stronger on these original ones I think!

(We replaced our 7 year olds last year with a Mini 4 though as she wanted to runs some apps that just would not work on the 1st gen)

As above though, older Apple devices will outlast any Samsung / Amazon Fire crap.

Sounds like a boon to me! Limits their tablet time.

My wife has a 6th generation iPad from 2018, so 7 years old now, and it still works perfectly. Still instant and snappy to use, screen still looks great compared to newer ones, battery life is down a bit obviously, but we just use it in the house as a jukebox for our AirPlay music system (or me watching a few videos in bed) so it's fine as we can plug it in.

I know a few people who binned Amazon tablets (or their kids Amazon tablets) as they were so crap and unusable after a couple of years. As per my post above, I returned the ones I bought for our kids as soon as I got them as I immediately recognised they were complete crap upon delivery.

Don't forget, the Amazon tablets also require a £6 a month Amazon kids subscription to get the most out of them. And... the Amazon tablets don't even have official apps like Youtube available for them as they run a weird/butchered version of Android. You have to use workarounds or third party apps.

The new iPad Mini is an excellent choice for kids these days. I've just bought one for myself (make of that what you will hehe). The apps are way better for the iPad as well. Incomparable.
