Hi all

My son was using his laptop when the screen went black - support of shows a fuzzy bar across the top of the screen.

Turned on and off and no change.

Plugged into monitor and the laptop is working fine so I suspect it’s likely to be the screen that’s bust?

Is it possible to get new screens fit and is it economically viable or is it better to replace the laptop?

Thanks for any advice.

Dave.

Probably the screen but could be a graphics driver issue, worth downloading the latest from the manufacturers website before deciding its fate.

I’ve been told by our local PC repair chap that is likely to be uneconomical to repair the laptop. It is a few years old now so probably time for a change.

There is some stuff on the laptop my son wants to keep - he’s got school work and some games that he has developed. Is there an easy way to transfer data over to a new laptop?

Second question - any suggestions for a laptop that would be suitable for developing basic games. He is not a gamer as such, more practicing coding.

Thanks

Could be the cable from the laptop base to the screen. Opening and closing a lot puts some strain on it. Open the case and give it a wiggle.

OP - what make & model of laptop is it? Do a search on YT for <laptop model> screen replacement & you may get some hits of videos showing how it's done if it's possible. Then search on ebay for a replacement screen & you may get some results.

Thanks both for the reply.

It’s a Asus GA502DU-AL025T

Looks like this may be the screen required -

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/295821150547

Which doesn’t look too expensive - just need to find someone to replace it and see if it fixes it. Beyond my skill level to do it smile

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1rucLk9vHrM - if that is the same laptop, it looks like you just need to pop the plastic frame off.

I replaced the screens on three of my grandchildren's ASUS laptops. The procedure was relatively simple and some of the YT videos were useful but some were not.

After watching the videos it is obvious which are the ones to follow.

Thanks both for the the responses and apologies for the delay replying.

I’ve transferred the data/games that my son wants to save to my laptop so that it is safe in case I mess anything up and have ordered a screen to have a go at fixing the problem.

The screen is cheap enough to have a go and it does look reasonably easy to do.

Wish me luck!

I get loads of satisfaction from repairing stuff, all learnt via youtube, Stripped and repaired a laptop, replaced a XBOX power supply and sorted a vax hoover which all still work!

All with a £15 screwdriver kit from amazon for the really tiny screws and clips etc

I wish you well with your quest!
