Just bought a rather smart iMac although bloody annoyed that during processing Apple introduced the next model with an M4 chip that is £100 cheaper. By the time I'd realised it was too late to cancel and reorder. No matter, what I have is enough for what I need. Unfortunately the external monitor that I was using with my 2019 iMac isn't compatible so need a new one but I'm struggling to find a compatible one. At the moment I'm using the 2019 as an external monitor which isn't ideal.

All I need is an external monitor no bigger than 27", not a gamer, use Office extensively, prefer 4k as the new display is pretty good. Budget up to £500 but ideally half that would be good. Grateful for any suggestions.

Have you received it yet? How long since you did?

You can return for a refund/replacement if it's not too long.

Exactly this, it'll just end up in the Refurb store when it goes back to Apple !

The iMac doesn't recognise it. Simple as that really.

How is it connected? HDMI, USB-C?

any old USBC to HDMI dongle should work fine, have you checked that teh dongle / adaptor you are using isn't the issue?

A screen at the end of the day is, just a screen

edit - just realised "iMac", so desktop, should just take any old HDMI fed monitor.

The one that did work will stay with the 2019 iMac so after a new one which was always the plan. Just happening sooner than I'd anticipated.

I have a BenQ PD2705U - it's been used with a Mac mini and a MacBook Air so should work - if you get it online you will have 14 days to return it.

It has both USB C connections as well as HDMI and comes with decent leads for both in the box.

Mine was from Amazon, Black Friday is coming up soon if you can hang on.

Or spend a score on a connector?

This might be worth a little more investigation. It's pretty unlikely that a monitor which works with a 2019 iMac is fundamentally incompatible with a 2024 model.

I think you're right and it's most likely the HDMI to USB-C adaptor but as I was going to buy a new monitor anyway, this has just hastened it. I just hadn't planned to do it straight away.
