I've been looking at buying a tablet to help with my 2 daughters homework which they receive most evenings and it's online. At first I was just looking to get them something like a Lenovo with a pencil as the eldest is also keen at drawing.

I then started looking at iPads thinking that if I was spending much more, I could use it with musoc production software as I like messing about with instruments and music hardware in my spare time. None of us in the household are Apple users however I previously had an iMac more than 10 years ago!

Obviously the budget went from under £200 to £900+accessories however, Apple products seem to last years longer than Android equivalents and the product support seems to mean they're useable for a long time. Whilst the two budgets might be far apart, I wonder how much of that saving is lost by having to buy new android tablets few years?

I am not a fan of Apple albeit not a hater either but I have to say, an Ipad will last far longer than any android equivalent I can think off in terms of hardware and OS support.

Phone related but it really annoys me that Android OEM are so poor.. I've had to move from a Sony Xperia 1 III to a pixel 7a because Sony have stopped supporting my phone which was brand new 2 years ago in March.

I bought a chinese android tablet for my daughter for about £80. Pretty decent spec, it has run flawlessly for 2 years.

It won't be anything as slick as an ipad, but am expecting it to do a couple more years before it gets replaced.

Bought a Tab S8 Ultra when they came out, typing on it now, lovely lovely thing.

People dis Android tablets because most of them are cheap and you get what you pay for, but if you use Android already, Samsung make really nice kit. Dex mode is really good if you have desktopy things you want to do with it too.

£900 is a lot to spend on a rather delicate glass object to place in the care of two children.

I don't really worry about if my phone is still being supported or not. As long as the battery is still good and the apps still support the version of the OS that's on it.

What sort of homework do they do on a tablet? Wouldn't something with a bigger screen and a built in keyboard be better? £900 gets a good laptop.

Latest gen iPad starts at £312 from AO.com
https://ao.com/product/mpq13ba-apple-ipad-tablet-b...

Little SB is now using one of those (With apple pencil and a cheap keyboard/case thing) for the bulk of her A level work. Obviously you can spend more on an iPad, but you really don't need to.

(Not tablets, but I've just binned off a 6-year old Dell laptop and reverted to a 12-year old Macbook Pro - which is running Win11 via bootcamp, and MacOS Monterey!)

I think you can do well with cheap Android devices changed fairly frequently. Against "premium" Android devices with higher prices, I would choose the Apple.

Just buy one off the refurb store, no need to spend £1k on an iPad Pro. You can get a 2020 model for less than £250 i5 will last another 3.5/ r years.

Why a tablet rather than a Windows or Linux machine?

Or even 2nd hand from someone like CEX who will give you a 2 year warranty. I’ve just bought my children 9th gen iPads which are only just over a year old.

You’d be better off buying them one each rather than trying to all share a pro. If you think you’ll be able to get access to it with the kids you’re probably mistaken.

Thanks. I would have been firmly in the budget tablet market if I didn't have eyes on using it myself. I was planning on the 13"air as it's a big screen and with the M2 chip, it should be good for years. As it's been said however, letting kids loose with a £900 tablet could be disaster. I've shot myself in the foot as I rubbished the cheap Android tablet to my eldest and now I've got to try and tell her otherwise laugh

iPad all day IMO. I only ever buy refurbished for a fraction of the price of new but they last forever and they use them in school so the familiarity helps.

Id looked at the official refurb options but is there any other places worth checking? There's a 9th Generation iPad in there at the moment with 128gb ram for £299.

Ill probably get the pencil so she can use it for art, I just have little knowledge of which ones are best suited for it.

I purchased a Galaxy S6 lite 3 years ago and it's still going strong.

Think it was only £300 or so.

The hardware is impressive, but ipados is deliberately neutered to stop it being a viable desktop replacement.
Apple's walled garden, daddy knows best, attitude also sucks.

I mostly use a tablet for watching YouTube and browsing the Internet and reddit.

Android means I can easily install revanced and infinity to avoid adverts in both youtube and reddit, no such easy option for ios/ipados.

Spending £1000+ for such activities would also be unwise..

Just buy a chunky case for the iPad if you have kids. We got one with grab handles on 3 sides. Kids drop it a lot but the iPad is always fine.
