Is anyone being brave and thinking of a move from their iPhone to one of the Foldables (Z Fold 6, new Pixel Fold 2 etc)?

I'm seriously toying with a full move to the ZF6 or possible the Pixel Fold 2, dependent upon it's specs etc..

I love all Apple, my MBA/Mac Mini/Apple TV serve me well; but maybe it's time to give up the iPhone seeing as their updates aren't that amazing anymore

I have the Pixel Fold now and it's a superb phone; but want to see what Google bring out next before I make my decision

The Galaxy Watch Ultra really appeals to me as well; so may go the whole hog and move from my 15PM and AWU to the new Samsung phone and Watch Ultra and buy a lesser Android phone simply for business purposes

I'm just wary re the ZF6s front screen being narrow and my hands/fingers not being small!

  • Forgot to add as well; has anyone got the Samsung Watch Ultra? If so, how are you liking it and what phone do you manage it with?

The biggest factor is how tied are you to Apple OS? Laptop, watch? AirPods?

If you read above; you'll see I'm well into the Apple ecosystem, but i'm not 'tied' into it at all...

I've always had an Android device being used and I've more of them in my drawers compared to no older iPhones at all...

That's not what I've asked though is it...

One of my kids did. Went to a Samsung, including transition to watch. Phone needed repair (can't remember what for) and when it came back they decided to sell whilst it was freshly refurbed and go back to an iPhone/Apple Watch. Given how much they'd lobbied to change ecosystem, I was not exactly pleased.

You mention the hardware but not so much the software. It’s pretty key to the decision

What I use on my Macs can be used across Android (ie Google (email, drive, photos etc) and MS Office / Adobe PDF etc

I rarely use iCloud for storage (have it all with Google) and I don't use Mail and rarely iMessage; that's all via WhatsApp really... FaceTime I'll still have on my MBA/Mac Mini etc

So as said; I'm in the Apple Ecosystem, but not tied to it

I haven’t but a good friend did last year

He went to a Flip4 and within 2mths he got rid of it as the hardware was just poor in comparison in his opinion. He didn’t come back to iOS though, he bought an S24 Ultra IIRC which was more akin to the level of device he was used to with Apple and loves it.

He’s now bought a new Samsung watch too where he was never bothered with an Apple Watch before.

Yeah the S24U is a superb phone; I haven't gone for it as TBH the S21/22/23U never did it for me, and I've been happy with the iPhones in that period... Just fancying a change and seeing as how much I like my Pixel Fold, that's what's making me toy with the idea of going fully Android again for my phones

I do really like the AWU2 I have; but the Samsung Watch Ultra will do all of what I need it to do, that I get out of/use on my AWU2 (if that makes sense)...

If Googles next Pixel Fold is a dud; then I do think the ZF6/Watch Ultra could be a good move away from iOS

I went from an iPhone Pro Max 12 to a Z Fold 5. Still miss some of the Apple-ness (the music player of all things - eveything I've found for Android has been clunky as hell and full of pointless 'features'), but wouldn't go back, at least not until Apple offer something similar. I'm not tied into any particular ecosystem* as such in that my phone is pretty much a standalone device. But I can imagine if you're deep into the Apple way of doing things and using their apps across multiple devices it's going to be a lot more of a wrench to switch.

I still use my iPhone, but as a purely work phone now.

* But I have recently bought a Samsung Ring if that counts

TBH I've had zero issues with Apple Music on my Pixel Fold; the app works well and it streams music without fault...

And as said; I'm not tied into the Apple ecosystem at all; I do not like Window's computers, so I'll always have a Mac (I'm waiting for the M4 Macs to come out so I can upgrade my M1 Mini as I sold the M2 Mac Mini Pro the other week as it simply wasn't being used)

And Samsung ring? I've missed that laugh

I was more meaning Apple music for playing MP3s, not streaming. All the MP3 players I tried from the app store have been terrible so far - overloaded with pointless gimmicks, piss-poor organisation of albums etc and catastrophically bad UIs.

Ah ok; have you tried PowerAmp?

I used to use that and found it to be very good... You needed to physically download your playlists on Apple Music though for it to copy them across. Not used it in years though; so no idea how it is now

As with everything you get use to it quickly. Had my Fold 4 for coming up to 2 years soon. No issues with the front screen, on holidays I put the sim into a Honor 5 for better battery life and camera and find the traditional smartphone form factor too wide!

Most used App on my Fold 4 is Chrome, Outlook followed by Acrobat. Once you are use to having essentially a mini tablet with you everywhere it's very hard to revert back to a normal phone all the time.

Cheers.. As an owner of a Pixel Fold and replying to this on it, the pull of a foldable I absolutely get...

But the Pixel has spoiled me per se with it's much wider (albeit shorter) front screen...

Thats where the worry stems from & why I'm wanting to see what Google release this week (officially and not via leaks) before I decide which avenue to go down...

According to a daughter, trade-in value isn't good. She said she liked it, but replaced it with a non-foldable iPhone.

PowerAmp was the least bad one of those I tried, and the one I still reluctantly use, but it's still pretty poor compared to the clean simplicity of Apple's offering.

You rarely read about people swapping camp and being happy with their decision.

You know what you know.

Apple will probably do a foldable in a year or three.

I'm in both camps and very comfy... But I don't need x2 flagship phones. So the idea is to have one as my main driver & a watch alongside and then use a normal phone for business (likely a Pixel 8a etc)

I'm trying to reduce my gadget count biggrin

And TBH I cannot see Apple releasing a foldable for a long time... If ever

I never trade in phones, prices are always a piss take

I buy my devices outright and if I sell them, it's generally on eBay and fortunately never had any issues

Two friends changed from Apple to Android. Both returned to Apple saying it was better.
