Hey all.

With Virgin Media for a long time now. They've recently emailed and said they want me to upgrade my current box to the later 360 box. Apparently im being given for SkySports+ whatever that is.

Obviously I know you can't transfer recordings from 1 box to another, so will lose any recordings on there now. 99% of the stuff doesn't really matter.

But there's a couple of programmes I'd like to get a copy of on my PC (because members of my family have a connection to the show) I've had a look online (legal and not so legally) to see if I can find the programmes anywhere else. And drawn blanks as they weren't exactly the most viewed things ever. So no ones actually bothered to upload them laugh And the respective channels also don't have the shows on their VOD sites which again suggests general lack of interest.

My gut is there must be some kind of CHEAP software I can get that would allow me to link the TiVo box via the HDMI to my PC and then capture it into a sensible format. I guess that's what the people that put entire series onto torrent sites are doing.

Any suggestions that people have used themselves would be great.

To the moderators. Appreciate this is on the edge in terms of strict legality. But I'm not looking to upload these recordings anywhere, nor profit from them in any way. So can we allow it to run for a while before zapping the thread. And I daresay the torrent site users already know how to do this! laugh

You can buy cheap HDMI to use capture cables, how good they are at allowing you to record the stream I can't help.with, but I have been using one for my home made ambilight for years.

Can you not remove the hard drive and put it in a usb caddy therefore saving all the hassle?

From what I read the TiVO box saves the programmes in an un-useable format for PC. SO removing the HDD isnt really a goer.

* * *

Been doing some Googling.

Seems you can use a HDMI video capture thingy (There's loads out there it seems)

Apparently these are nowhere near the 4k they claim but are fine for 1080HD. And can be used in conjunction with the Windows "camera" application to record programmes. I'll probably give one of these a bash unless anyone can think of a better way

I once videoed some stuff off a big screen which was setup in a quiet and darkened room and the results were pretty good.
