Kids GPS watch

I’ve got a couple of school age kids who are now sitting about between their friends houses - it seems GPS watches are fairly common to keep in touch with them and track their location.
The other half has been recommended an XPLORA XGO 3 as the one to have by other parents.
Anyone here got one, or something similar they would recommend (or avoid)?
It has the joys of a subscription model, but if it’s the best way to keep track of them while keeping them away from a mobile phone it might be worth it. AirTags seem hit and miss where we live so looking for something a bit more reliable.
