My old laptop has developed a vertical white line on the screen. It's there if I boot to the BIOS too so I think I can discount any software / driver issues.
What does the hive mind think? Could it just be the cable or is the screen likely to be the culprit?
The laptop is a prehistoric HP G61, originally Windows 7 but now running Linux.
I'm quite happy to start pulling the laptop apart because it owes me nothing and has no important data on it.

Could be either but chances are it'll be the cable as it passes through the hinge area.

This, all those years of opening and shutting the lid will have caused a wire to break.

Had the exact same thing with an old Acer laptop and the same problem killed our dishwasher.

Thanks guys, I'll look at sourcing a replacement cable.
