I'm comming to a point that I will need a laptop soon for car tuning ecu setup, it's only for my own setup and won't be doing anything for anybody else

My friend is using a lenovo x1 carbon which he thinks is awesome and I should get the same/close to same model and specs of his I'm unsure of at the moment

I would have to purchase a refurbished model which doesn't bother me but where would you trust the most to buy from, I have seen laptops direct,pc renewed , also there are many on ebay that have been refurbished

I'm looking no more than £500 but around the £400 would be more preferable

Would you buy from ebay or a sole website and if you have bought off a refurbished website previously which ones

Thanks

You've got lots of business options using ebay e.g.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/37511345460 Newandusedlaptops4u
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/395547651087 cheapest_electrical (used before and they are good)

All pretty similar, basically the only right you want is to send it back if the condition is poor.

Or I have used private sellers in the past, checking their laptop comes with onsite support (Lenovo Premier support / Dell ProSupport) for some extra insurance

(reply sent on a T14S sourced from a private seller)

Honestly, if it’s just for ECU tuning I would simply buy the cheapest ‘student’ Windows laptop you can find. If you want to use it for other things then by all means spend more on a better spec, but for car use you want cheap and robust, IMHO.

I bought one of these for less than £150 as a garage laptop https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B09DLJ4G4W/. All you really need is a USB port and a decent battery life - mine runs VCDS for VAG, MultiECUScan for Fiat/Alfa and Emerald software for my Lotus, no problems.

i do have a laptop but its used by my mrs and son and so slow with all the crap they have on there, so wanting a little bit better than a cheap cheap to keep for myself it will be used for few other bits but mainly to use with my car tuning and logging, wont be doing any type of gaming maybe some Adobe illustrator for line drawings for making parts and stuff

I bought one from CEX for well under budget.

Probably could have saved 30-50 quid on eBay but got to check it over and a 2 year warranty.

It's a decent spec Lenovo and will see me through a few years.

Here is a recent Dell deal at £250, then add an external screen for your illustrator work

I've recently bought a re-furbished Lenovo Thinkpad here: www.pcrenewed.co.uk

It's the most sturdily built laptop I've owned. 15.6" screen, 32GB RAM and 512GB SSD, Win 11 for under £500.

What you're describing doesn't need much processing power, memory or anything else. A couple of hundred quid will be more than enough.
