My wife broke her Kindle in August last year by putting a garden chair leg on it. The screen froze, and nothing works.

I found it in a desk drawer this morning, and the screen appears to still be on. Surely the battery will have run out by now - it's been nearly a year!

That is the whole point of the e-ink screens, they only use power to change the display. What's on the display will remain indefinitely.

This.

The black 'ink' on the screen is black magnetic particles in a clear solution. When the image on the screen changes, the magnetic pattern on a grid in the screen changes, making the black particles stick to the screen to form images and words. They remain stuck until the pattern is changed and energised again.

The only time power is consumed is for the split second when the image is changed, to re-arrange the magnetic pattern.
