Little boy (8) has a Nintendo switch - as his account shows he's under 13 he's unable to voice chat with his friends when playing online - this doesn't seem to be workable around.

Looking for a tablet that will allow to install and use Kinzoo (kids chat app) and / or facetime.

So that basically means the cheapest still usable Ipad / Ipad mini / Air etc?

Or a similar android thing that'll work reasonably well and allow access to play store.

Which should I be looking for?

£250 for a refurbished iPad. Should last a good few years with a screen protector.

EBay iPad mini refurbished £120 ish and a BIG case for an 8 year old. We have them for ours bullet proof unless you take them into the bath (yes one of the kids did this) don’t spend anything more for a kid to mess about with.

I found the cellular version of the iPad was well worth it with an extra sim on my account. No faff trying to connect it to WiFi/tether if they take it anywhere

Thanks all - does it matter too much if things aren't supported any more in terms of IOS updates?

Or will that mean that certain apps don't work any more?

It may mean some apps don't work. It's best to get a device that is in support and will receive updates. That's why I suggested Apple Refurbished, they are as new devices with new batteries and a years warranty.

You'd be best finding out what his mates have access to before hand, no point forking out for a iPad if none of the others have one.

ours is 12 now, but hes had access to Whatsapp since 10 via a Nokia 7110 4G and now a Samsung S8+ which he can video call on his mates or send messages.

This.

What is he playing on the Switch where the rest are chatting?

Fortnite.

But they're on either xbox or PlayStation.

They use iPhone to chat when they can but it's my work phone so I'm not ways around
