Thank you to the Pistonheads Hivemind as I bought one of the Costco IMacs and very delighted with the result..

So as that shows… I don’t need the latest and greatest.

I use my 10.5in iPad Pro (2016?) primarily for browsing / connecting to outlook for work emails. Battery now atrocious and Apple won’t replace (apparently not a hardware issue!)

So I need a cheap iPad with an Apple keyboard. Don’t need massive storage, but still needs to be relatively future proofed given iOS updates. Any recommendations?

Thank you in advance

My iPad is of a similar vintage and is still usable though starting to slow down so I’ve been asking myself the same question.

I think it would be worth going for an iPad with an M series processor to guarantee longevity. And I also think it’s a false economy to skimp on memory- you don’t know how hungry apps will be in the future or what new things you will use the iPad for.

I tend to “run my devices into the ground” - still on an iPhone 8 and back then I thought 64gb would be plenty. I’m struggling with that now…

I think when I replace my iPad I’ll go for one with at least an M1 processor and 256gb storage. That should guarantee a good few years of use…

Normally I'd say the basic iPad for 99% of users. It's everything you need and can take a keyboard (although the official Apple one is £££).

However the rest of the iPad lineup are on the better M processors - Air is M2, Pros are M3 now. If you've got the extra then at least stepping up to the Air would probably be worth it for longevity, or else look for a previous generation Air or Pro on M1 or M2.

Get the battery replaced at an independent mobile phone shop.

I was using a Google Pixel 3 64Gb for ages and the battery and storage was poor. I bought Vikingette1 an iPhone 15 Pro Max for her birthday and inherited her old iPhone 11 Pro 256Gb where the battery was comprehensively caned. Found a decent mobile phone place and was offered the choice of cheap battery for £25, good quality replacement for £35 or the OEM for £75(?). I went for the mid range one and fk me it's good. Battery lasts 3-4 days almost like an old Nokia! biggrin

The standard entry iPad is more than enough for your needs

Exsactly what the wife uses and she has this keyboard case: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Inateck-Keyboard-Compatib...

Add a Jtech/ESR screen protector and you've got a decent set up

I’m not sure you can call a device with 64gb memory “relatively future proofed” which is one of the requirements

Also ios 18 due out in autumn requires an M processor for Apple Intelligence requirements.

No idea if this will be a damp squib or the next big thing but again if future proofing is a consideration I think it is worth stretching at least to M1 iPad.

I upgraded from my 10.5” iPad Pro to a 2nd hand 11” pro with M1 through CEX. Very happy, looked pretty much brand new and 2 year warranty for not much more than half the price of a new 11.5” with M2.

The iPad Air is probably the sweet spot but I’m not sure I could go back to fingerprint unlocking since having Face ID on my iPhone.
