App updates are crap!
Discussion
Bit of a rant..........
I have some savings in Ford Money. Last week, I discovered that the app no longer works on my phone (Note 9) - and claims that my phone is either not compatible or has been rooted.
I have some savings with RCI - and discovered today that is saying the same thing.
I've found plenty of reviews online complaining about the same problem. Maybe my phone is now too old.
I listen to Planet Rock / Kerrang quite often - now, that app has been replaced by "Rayo". But - I cannot link my Alexa account to Rayo - it says my Alexa app needs updating (it's up to date).
That means I can't make use of premium (no ads) when listening through Alexa, which is how I use it in the car via Alexa Auto. Although reviews suggest that even if I did link, the premium feature of no ads isn't working through Alexa with the new app anyway.
Everything was working fine a couple of weeks ago - it does not feel like progress!

The trials and tribulations of buying Android. The Note 9 was released in 2018 with Android 8 and only received two software updates as far as Android 10, with no chance of receiving the current Android 14.
Whereas iPhone XR/XS which also released in 2018 with IOS 12 still received the latest IOS 17 update last September, and it is only the next one it is likely to miss out on, but even then iPhone 6s models launched back in 2015 are still supported with security and bug fix OS updates so that 2018 iPhone will still be good for a few years yet.
Damn....... the "not spending money this year" thing really isn't working out terribly well!

Radioplayer has Planetrock and works on android 8
The Rayo app does work - ad free - and Planet Rock etc. do work via Alexa, but since I can't link they're not ad free (and reviews suggest that even if it did link, they're still not).blingybongy said:
Sonos app enters the chat.
Not really interested in Sonos - I pay for Amazon music (or actually, the g/f does) so no real desire to switch. Plus it's actually the Rayo app that has the issue, not Alexa / Amazon music.I don't really want a new phone so I'll try an alternative approach. I have a tablet that is newer than my phone so I can probably link the Rayo app to Alexa OK on that.
And may just switch to using the banking apps on that too - I don't really need to do that on the phone.

That's Samsung, not Android. Plenty of other ways to outlast Apple's timeline is you want to compare apples. That 4 years less vendor support than the iPhone XR that we're talking about
Is Google vs Apple not comparing "apples"
Unfortunately that sort of thing is one of the possible trade offs.
I've had an iPhone XS for coming up to six years and Apple are going to support iOS 18 on it which means I should get another year out of it if I can hold out on replacing it.
I don't really get the whole "religious" side of Android and Apple but I'd be surprised if there are too many Android phones that will have six or seven years of useful life around OS updates.

There's not many, which isn't surprising given the large number of hardware manufacturers and price spread but Pixel 8 and Samsung S24 promise 7 years and quite a few budget brands offer 4 .The thing is most people wouldn't keep a phone for 4 years nevermind 7I've had an iPhone XS for coming up to six years and Apple are going to support iOS 18 on it which means I should get another year out of it if I can hold out on replacing it.

The thing is that some people do then come here and rant about it I'm agnostic, I use both iOS and Android and spent many years managing app development on both. If the conversation is about why do apps have to be updated for new o/s versions, that's a different discussion, mind you

Do you also write those Tory press releases about the Labour Party’s plans?
We’ve just seen that the iPhone XR is receiving 8 years of updates compared to 3 years for similar vintage Google phones. Historically, Apple have offered 7 to 8 years of full support and updates. Bookmark this and come back in 7 years to see how Apple is doing with their support
