After some advice - Sons iPhone has stopped taking a charge when plugged in, tried different cables and nothing - it does charge on the wireless dock though.

Tried the toothpick and fluff - seems clean and nothing in there. But still nothing, is the charge port a common problem or something more serious?

Any other suggestions to try before we look at repairs

Buy a cable from apple, I had same problem, device not charging, some cables seem to be in able of taking the current and the device stops charging. It will continue if left connected.

The cheap cables on in the internet are not worth the money, ask me how I know smile

I had this on my last phone, it only charged one way round and you had to sort of bend the cable to get connection.

Get an old school tooth pick and clean out the charging port. It will be full of fluff and crap. Once you clear it out it should charge fine.

We have tried hard reset, soft reset
I am pretty good at the tooth pick clean out - nothing in there
tried lots of different 'good' cables in both ways round
Its all up to date on the right software / OS
plugged it in and waited 30 mins as apple suggested

If there are no other suggestions - its only option is off to a repairer - might get the battery changed as well while its open

I had this the other day on my 13Pro.

Waggled the toothpick in and around, not a lot came out and still didn’t work.

I persisted and kept repeating the process about 20-30 times, still didn’t see much in the way of fluff. However it started working again.

Before replacing have a good poke with one of the soft plastic toothpicks over and over again. Nothing to lose if you have to replace anyway.

The socket (and internal connections) can fail. I’ve had this happen on an iPad Pro, and annoyingly replacing it on mine needs you to remove pretty much every other component to get at it.

Unless anyone else knows of a better fix I’d suggest getting a quote from Apple (they can sometimes be very reasonable) and from a third-party repair place or buying the part yourself, plus the repair kit, and spending an afternoon replacing it.
