Hi All

I have a horrible feeling I've asked this before - and if I have, I'll head over to the Health forum.... biglaugh

So...I love gadgets of all shapes & size, budgets and uses. I have many.

But....drones? What do people use them for? In the DIY forum, I'm discussing a leaking gutter - I can see a use for a drone to have a look at the gutter, but then I'm not allowed to fly over houses?

I'm also not allowed to fly over or near people.

I also have to worry about going no higher than 400ft, noise, upsetting people etc - so what do people use them for?

I live on the Jurassic coast - I imagine I could take some stunning photos and videos - but there are always people around....

What's the deal?

You can fly them over roofs etc., they just need to be the lightweight type.

you sound like you are sticking to the rules to much. use them and say sorry if you get in trouble.

I fly FPV drones and its just enjoyment going out and doing flips and flying through gaps at speed.

I want one with a grab or scoop, but all they seem to have is a camera. That means I can look at problems, but not fix them.

Seems like a simple requirement, but can’t see anything available that fits the need.

They are for people who can't fly proper R/C model helicopters.

I have a dji mini2 it's under 250g weight so has a lot less restrictions to its use. Can fly it near enough anywhere apart from near airports etc obv. It's a good 4k camera is able to all sorts tbh. I take it on roadtrips and vid the sights up close etc. Great we things. Although I'm on my 2nd after losing the 1st to the sea down Ireland.

As a former aerial photog, I’d say you’re likely to take better pictures at 100m AGL than from an aircraft at 1000’+, both in terms of atmospheric haze and skylines. See the Drone Pics thread for work by masters of the art like GetCarter

If you are local to the Jurassic Coast, you should be able to get great pictures early in the morning before crowds of grockles turn up

I bought a dji mini 4 ( had the bigger kind before) and its bloody brilliant vs the old style, so easy to use with the inbuilt monitor.

I purchased it to record our hamlet i built and my car collection distributed amidst the property and grounds, the results were stunning! worth every penny just for that.

So easy to fly that i’m going to do the interiors of all the buildings to.

Great piece of kit vs the old stuff from 5 years ago

The skill required to fly an R/C heli is way way more than a drone I'll give you that.

It's probably more accurate to say that they are for people who enjoy what they are and have probably never even tried to fly a remote control helicopter.

Depends what you define by ‘fly’

Anyone can get a drone in the air. However very few drone operators can actually capture ‘cinematic’ footage.

Some of these drones are many hundreds of pounds. How easy are they to lose?

I've only used mine for looking at my roof and the roofs of a few friends. That on it's own has paid for it.

Theyre for annoying people at work and then uploading the video to youtube after winding them up more just because they can.

Having flown planes and helis as a kid it took a while to un-learn when I first got a dji : )

I'm probably the same as the vast majority in that my drone was used 2 or 3 times, and has been in storage for 10 years...

The latest ones are quite insane and look fun if you have the reaction times for it:
