As in, just backs up 'everything' to an external HDD, and you can just reload everything from that should the worst happen. Last time I looked you had File History which kind of backed up certain folders only.

Is that possible? Would it even work if you had a new Windows laptop with different specs?

I don't use cloud backup as there's no internet in my music room away from home where I use the Wndows machine. And reinstalling and configuring all the different plugins and tiny apps and optimising the OS for audio work every time I get a new machine is just a collosal ballache.

Yes, I know... 'Just get a Mac'. Which I have to a degree, I'm typing this on a Mac, but I'm still learning how they work so until I'm properly familiar and ironed out compatibility issues - I'm in limbo between Apple and Windows for now.

Thanks

It's not quite Time Machine but there are programs that will make scheduled images of a Windows drive to a USB drive or a NAS. Macrium is one:

I'm sure there are others that will be suggested.

Backup is part of the O/S (Windows 10 and 11) - has been for some time.

I'd fix the connectivity issue in that room, if I am honest. It will open up many options for you.

File History is very similar to Time Machine. Works well.

Full backups can be done using Backup.

No need for 3rd party apps. (Same with a/v - Defender works really well).
