Currently on a 1Gb service via an alt-net and my contract is due to end next month, with no sign of Openreach installing in the area for the near future.

Thing is, they now offer a 2Gb symmetrical service for the same price, of which i am tempted by.

Worth doing?

The thing in the back of my head says no, as nothing in the house as far as im aware, can handle anything above 1Gb anyway (wifi, phones laptops, switches etc).

Or am i missing summink?

Currently £49 for my 1Gb service and the price would stay the same for the 2Gb.

Dropping to £39 to stay on 1Gb.

Can you utilise the 2Gbps pipe, so do you have the correct hardware?
Are you touching the sides of the current allocation of bandwidth?
Most people would just take the savings. Most built in NICs have a bandwidth of up to 1Gbps, as you've already mentioned.

In all honesty I think all the hardware is limited to 1gb I think.

iPhones as old as 14s, two year old MBA M1, usual hard wired tv, sky box, one newly built gaming pc but I think that is just normal rj45 data card.

We do have one newish MBP and a two year old reasonably specced HP laptop that’s in WiFi.

will you notice the increase in speed?

I'd be sticking with the 1Gb and take the savings....

Thanks guys.

I’ll take the savings as i can’t imagine we would ever fill those kinds of speeds, even on a good day and until tech catches up.

Its good to know you have a 2gbps connection available, for when Wifi 7 becomes widespread. Probably a couple of years off for that however.

Well, that was a surprise.

Just called them to chat about it and they have done me my same service for £29/month on an ‘old offer’ they had running in May.

Can’t argue with that!
