Good afternoon everyone

My son is about to start a a new school where the pupils have to provide laptop to work on.

Basic requirements are windows based, touch screen, larger than 11" screen and a good battery life. The school will provide all software.

Our budget is approx. £500.

Would need to have good support if something went wrong as I'm not the best with IT.

I'd thought something like this would do but can anyone recommend something better or tell me this is a no go?

Thanks for your help

Jon

Does the school provide guidance on the model? It's sometimes much easier to have the same as everyone else than trying to eke out the "best laptop possible for £".

No, the basic requirements are what the school has advised are needed. I agree it would be easier if they just said go and buy one of these.

If he's going to be carting it into school and home every day I'd recommend something like form the more business orientated ranges like a dell latitude or Lenovo ThinkPad.

They are built to a much much better standard and will take far more abuse.

If touchscreen is required the one you listed doesn't fit the bill; but there are budget foldable/2:1/convertibles/whatever you want to call them in the £100 to £500 range: https://www.currys.co.uk/computing/laptops/laptops...

No direct experience of any of these, but I'd go for best combo of most amount of ram and largest amount of storage (plus points if there is expandable storage option) for the price you can afford.

Microsoft Surface Pro are a good laptop as well. Well built, slim, good battery life.

Just avoid the Surface Pro 4 models as they have a common issue with the screen where they eventually overheat and cause the picture to jump. Something to do with a manufacturing fault at Samsung i believe.

You should be able to get a refurb surface pro 6 or 7 under budget.

There is also a Dell copy called the Dell Latitude 5290.
