About every 12 months or so i put this question up to see if any new joiners may be able to give us some info suppliers etc

Our society publishes a magazine three times a year and in order to give members a bit more Value added to their subs i would like to add a members only section so they can log in and view old copies

This address is what i would like to do so the can access any selected issue and browse through it

https://www.lurs.org.uk/historicalarchive.htm

Is there anyone out there that knows of this add on or something similar and where i can get one?

TIA

Why not put them all in OneDrive and then manually share to their account? Not perfect, but a start and easy to manage

Looking at the source of a page on the website it was created using http://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com

They have an extensive tutorial section that includes how to create logins: https://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com/login_basics.htm...

Is this for a Wordpress-based site? If so, then a simple document library type plugin would suffice, eg https://wordpress.org/plugins/document-library-lit...

If it's not Wordpress, then some indication of what you're using would help narrow suggestions to more useful ones.

If you had read the post above yours it says how it was created and how to add login functionality to it.

I asked about the OP's website. That isn't the OP's website.

A couple of posts above yours explained that the site was created with "wysiwygwebbuilder.com"

Then a link was posted to the wysiwygwebbuilder.com site explaining how to create a login.

If you look at the source code for the OP's website you will see this:

<meta name="generator" content="WYSIWYG Web Builder 18 - http://www.wysiwygwebbuilder.com">

I think perhaps your IQ has dropped?

The OP's domain is *hosted* by wysiwygwebbuilder.com

And as such is built using their software.

Jesus wept.

I'm not sure how I can make this any clearer.

The (lurs.org.uk) website the OP has linked to is just an example of the sort of thing they'd like, but the OP hasn't actually provided the address of their own website.

Clearly I'm not the only one who thought that the OP wanted to password protect the (given) downloads page to provide members only access.

Obviously we were mistaken - however the OP wasn't very clear....

Perhaps if they had just provided more information about their own site in the first place....

Holy st, team. Granted the OP didn't actually provide a site but it's clear what's required. And what the OP has sent as a sample is far from ideal.

OP - this is crying our for a WordPress site - if you're not comfortable building something give me a shout and i'll build it for you, for free. I'll caveat this though that you will need to think about a hosting plan with significant disk space depending on requirements.

I can also help with hosting, but that will incur a monthly cost (that i don't benefit from) for the server hosting.

As the OP mentioned he'd posted before about this I thought I'd have a look and see if there was any more info in the previous posts that would help.

I found these:

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&...

He didn't respond to either.

I'm out.

I’ll leave my offer up for 2 more days. Poor show though, agreed.

OP, as you do this annually, do you make these appeals, get responses then claim that you never get any response as a response to your club?

How do you end up Being the Go to guy every year with no return this far?

Well, as predicted the OP has simply not responded to this or any of his other "annual appeals lol" - shame really as it's a decent project that i think would add to your club.

OP - same time next year??

Sorry gents for lack of info and quick replying, and thanks for all the suggestions on the initial query of back numbers being available, but have been caught up helping a chap get his car sorted,,and a bit of me time tidying up the workshop as i lost the lathe under all the rubbish ...lol, drawing autocad plans to build up a sort of angle poise arrangement to get those circular lights that the posers use on their sites for better lighting on the lathe and miller... they are just the job., along with hospital visits for mrs Fox, so this was put on the back burner, but to recap as there were a couple of 'addtl info reqd' comments so here goes;

Society has a website. and i have been 'asked' to have a look at it. I would like to present the committee with a good working plan to get it running a bit better. Now i am not a great webmaster, but can follow real idiots guide if given simple instructions on the click this, move that, insert this,, type of checklist

It is a General public access for information, but i would like to have a password protected members only section, so they can get a bit more for the annual subs
.
The initial set up chap has said that if we want anything else then cash will have to change hands, but i am sure that given time and a bit of advice on 'best fit' add ons that a few of us will be able to run it on a very steep learning curve I believe it is Wordpress and have got the dummies guide for it...but atm i need a dummies guide for the dummies guide!

What would like to see is a Members only portion of the site with following sections

Wants/for sale

Photo section where they can load up their own videos and pictures

Chat room

A section for members to renew by BACS and another for people to apply to join

In the open section, to have a selected issue so visitors can read it as a idea of what we have and perhaps join

Also in the General area, a list of books we have for sale ,

As we are nearing 200 issues of out 3 times a years journal, to have an archive where members can browse all the back issues.. and the one that the LURS site has is the ideal thing,
Thanks for all the suggestions on that initial enquiry

hope that helps a bit on what we are looking for. All we are asking for is where we can get these add ons, what ones are best and easy of use both for use and the members and how much!! Free would be nice...lol

Once again apologies for being a bit tardy but i think the light i can see at the end of the tunnel is not now a train coming towards us

Glad you responded but let me be the first to state that what you are actually looking for is a secure site with the ability to handle secure payments, deal with private and sensitive data and adhere to a LOT of compliance requirements. At this point the design and layout of the site is just the shell.

It's possible but it will involve engaging someone who knows what they are doing and can make sure it's within the confines of the law. You have to weigh up the time you'll need to invest in learning this against paying someone that will not only build it but be available to react to any issues that will arise. Wordpress is great but it is not fire and forget. It needs fed and watered and TLC throughout it's lifespan.

Give me a shout if you'd like to discuss doing this and i will absolutely help keep costs down but i don't want to break any site rules about self promotion etc. I have recently built full, end to end web shops that do everything you need.

If no one in the club has any experience running a website and Wordpress install, I can't stress enough how much of a bad idea it is even be thinking about running your subscriptions and a shop through the site yourselves.

You are much much much better off leaving that kind of thing to a 3rd party. I'd recommend Zoho for this, but YMMV. They can look after subscription billing, you can set up a little shop for merch and books, etc with them and it'll all run through a very easy-to-use billing and CRM system.

For low-demand use like your club would be, they are really inexpensive and very user-friendly. Way more user-friendly than a Wordpress backend biggrin

You can play about with Wordpress as much as you like for anything relatively non-critical like your basic front-facing web pages and a password-protected back issue section.

Wordpress plugins plus anything financial or involving sensitive data is not an area where learning on the job from a very inexperienced starting point is anything other than a terrible idea imho.
