Are they just rubbish?

There's a 3 year old 55" Smart TV that's just gone pop in my daughters holiday home in France, was watching something on Netflix when there's a short "screech" and the screen went haywire then blank, it now will not start up and just displays the Samsung Smart by Tenzen text then switches off, then on, then off ad nauseum. Tried all the fixes on the interweb including trying to update the firmware via USB but the TV doesn't stay on long enough to read the files so the only thing left is taking the thing apart which I ain't doing.

Will be leaving here soon so no time to get it looked at locally, the repair place is closed until next Tuesday anyway.

She previously had a 2 year old 43" Samsung and that also failed with sound but no picture and Samsung seemingly couldn't fix it so it was replaced with the above.

Samsung TV - Never again!

I’ve never had one, but back when Toshiba was still Toshiba, they sent a guy round to look at a (well out of warranty) telly back when they were still expensive.

Guy turned up in a Samsung van, with Samsung workwear.

He say me eying this up and said ‘don’t worry, we are just an agent, but we see more Samsung than anything else’

Anyways, Toshiba fixed the 4 year old TV free of charge, no quibble, no quoting CRA, just one email, asking could they help.

Told a mate and he called them, they couldn’t fix his, but offered him any new one at half price.

Now Toshiba are just a brand used by Vestel in the TV market.

Rubbish? no...

Brilliant? no...

We have had 2 in the last 6 years and they have been fine. I don't think I would buy another though.

I’ve had three Samsungs (all LED) in the last 6 years and all are still working perfectly.

I prefer the OS/Interface to other manufacturers and think the only reason I’d change was if I went OLED where LG might might get a look in.

Currently using a Samsung, no problems.

I could say the same as the OP about LG or Phillips, or Sharp though. It really depends on the TV lottery.

Got a Samsung 55" here with a dead screen that's only a few years old, I used to deliver and install TV's in my last job and before I left about five years ago we were seeing a lot of faulty Samsungs. The LG's and even the cheap Vestels I also installed were much more reliable.

I've dropped Samsung, not because of reliability issues, but because the software is crap. Although I had a nearly 5 year old TV that was repaired under warranty and was essentially brand new apart from the logic and power board when they brought it back, but the back lights failed shortly after when the TV was out of warranty and the repair only had a 3 month warranty.

I'd much prefer to buy a dumb TV and use a fire stick or similar for the smart functions but you just can't.

Even my 65" LG OLED (1800 quids worth) failed twice in 3 years - 2nd time was a screen failure, and Costco refunded the full purchase price because it was beyond economical repair, and I bought a new LG OLED...

TVs today are built to be disposable unfortunately.

Moral of the story is to buy from somewhere with a bulletproof 5 year warranty.

Had a 48" (I think) Samsung for around 10yrs. Still works.

I've never broke any TV in fact.

I used to rate them, but not now.

My first one lasted for many years, and we still have one from the same era in the kitchen.

When our livingroom TV died we bought a top of the range samsung as a replacement. From the off I could see a slight discolouration when the screen was full black, but not enough that there seemed to be a fault.

Roll on a couple of years and it had developed into a visible dark patch. In about the same time my brothers samsung developed very bright spots in a regular patern. It was like the back lighting had lost a diffuser.

I won't be buying any more Samsung TV's without at least a 5 year warranty.

First big tv i ever bought for myself when i moved out was a Samsung, was around £1250 and lasted 14 months before the screen died.

Was properly pissed off with them as they refused to give any kind of refund or offer to repair it, just kept stating 12 month guarantee so not eligible for anything, this was around 15 years ago and a big chunk of my apprentice wage at the time on top of having just bought the place.

Sony all the way since that waste of money for the 5 year guarantees.

We had to use the guarantee on one last year (tv was 4 years old) after a strange blue line appeared, Sony tech that came to our house to look at it said it was due to thunder bugs getting in somehow, straight swap for like for like new tv he had brought incase it wasn't repairable. Said it was more cost effective than replacing the screen itself and we then got 5 years guarantee on the new one as well!

I'm still using a 12yo Samsung 3D TV (never used it in 3D - the picture in 2D was good). In fairness, the first one that was delivered failed when I switched it on but Amazon replaced it without question. The replacement is still working fine, although the apps are no longer supported and have quietly been withdrawn over the years.

I have 2 Samsung screens, a 6 year old and a 2 year old. Both been perfect.

Also have an 18 year old Sony which, at the time, was top of the range which maybe why it's still going strong with an amazing picture (and why I refuse to get rid of it).

Three Samsung TVs here oldest must be more than 15 years old others probably 10 and 3.
No issues whatsoever with any of them.

Bought a 32" LED back in December 2013. Used for everything. Never missed a beat and continues to plough on as the main telly in the house.

Samsung sell more TVs than any other manufacturer so there's bound to be more failures

Plus someone is more likely to pay to have a £1k Samsung repaired than just bin it which they will do with the £199 Vestel that went wrong.
