We have a family iMac - it slightly old but works well - all upto date with software etc.

But we are getting lots of safari security notifications saying someone is downloading files, connecting to your computer, Macafee needs updates and detecting security issues (we don't have mcafee) etc etc

I think our nephew has been clicking lots of links when he has played on the computer

So as a techno idiot - I think I need to do some sort of cleanup - any recommendations of what to trust and how to do it??? Where can I go looking at what to delete etc

Thanks in advance for the idiots guide to sorting this out

I would install MalwareBytes and run this as a first action.

How old is it?

A modern Mac with up to date Macos and Safari is pretty good with that sort of stuff so to be getting all those pop-ups takes some doing IMO.

The reason I ask is if the Mac is old it may limit the product choices.

Even then whilst there is Mac malware it's not something I've ever felt the need for on my own Macs unless I was doing some seriously dodgy st biggrin

its a 2017 iMac and runs great - never had a problem before - its not used heavily but our nephew goes on it to 'play' some games and you know kids they click on any link!!!

So its defiantly picked something up - the OS is unto date which normally gives good protection, but it is something on safari

If you haven't already done so you might wish to set up an account just for him with minimal privileges to help reduce future issues?

See Riley Blue's post above - you need to switch off notifications from the offending sites in your Safari settings
