Just bought a phone from MM for my daughter - iPhone SE. I had a good experience buying an iPhone 12 from them a year or so ago so thought why not? Went with “Pristine” condition to get the best I could find.

It turned up, all seemed good, case in good shape, no dead pixels etc. Checked the battery condition - it says possible non-genuine Apple.

I’m pretty unhappy about that TBH - there’s no way of checking the health of it. I know they will say they have run tests and it’s within spec, but that’s not the point. As far as I am concerned it’s had somebody unauthorised inside it fiddling about - there could be damage, could have lost IP rating, could be dust in the camera etc. etc.

I know it’s an old phone, but if I’d wanted to take a punt I would have bought one from ebay. I’ve paid a premium to get one in a decent shape.

It’s within the 14 day return for any reason so shouldn’t be a problem (unless there’s some bullst restocking fee) but am I being unreasonable?

Everyone will have a slightly different interpretation of that.

You had an expectation that wasn’t met. Send it back if you’re not happy. Nothing lost.

And a 12 month warranty.

If you're really that bothered then email them and see what they say. Make sure the unoriginal battery is covered by the warranty at least.

Some of those phone reselling places have a new non-genuine battery fitted to replace the older failing original battery. It probably makes it viable to resell an older phone which wouldn't pass muster with its original battery. My iphone 12's battery was at 82% capacity last time I looked, and it does feel like it barely has the capacity to last the day at times. I wouldn't want to buy it this way second hand, so you're probably better off than you would have been with an older genuine battery. Having said that, I'd still prefer a genuine battery if it were me, as long as it wasn't less than 90% capacity. If you're able to, just send it back!

I returned one for the same reason - the phone was giving a big warning message in settings that it was a non genuine battery.

There are plenty of sellers that put in genuine new batteries.

I bought an SE from another seller on eBay with good feedback and it had 100% battery health with a new Apple battery.

The problem is I don’t know whether it has just been replaced by MM, or if the previous owner did it themself or used some dodgy back alley phone shop. Or indeed what state the battery is in.

Funnily my iPhone 12 had about 85% when I bought it from MM last May and has just started complaining that it needs replacing. I suppose I could hassle them about it but ideally I’d like an apple replacement and they’re really not that expensive…

Pristine is based solely on the items cosmetic condition apparently & nothing about coming with all original factory supplied components, which is probably what most people would take it to mean. -

What does "pristine" condition mean?
Pristine is the highest grade of refurbished item we currently offer.
Our pristine products are in immaculate condition and excellent working order, they should have next to no signs of wear and tear. You're getting a great device at an even better price!
Our refurbished grades are based solely on the cosmetic appearance of the devices therefore no matter which condition device you select, it will function perfectly.
All of our Tech products come with a FREE 12-month warranty. Every device we sell goes through an extensive in-house refurbishment process and thorough testing.

I bought a new iPhone 15 Pro Max for Vikingette1 for her birthday. In return she gave me back her iPhone 11 Pro 256Gb and the battery was caned. I had it swapped out for a non-OEM battery and was warned about the non-gen battery alert vs. £80+ for an original battery. My phone was a 64Gb Pixel 3 constantly struggling with storage and battery life. For the cost of a £25 battery it's a revelation in battery life and storage.

Battery life, even with the non-gen battery is immense. I leave my phone in the car whilst at work and the Pixel would drain down to 60%, the non-genuine batteried iPhone loses 3%

I bought an iPhone SE 2020 for £125 a few weeks back. Came in an Apple box with the logos stickered out. 100% genuine battery and new condition, it's been perfect so far.

I bought a 2020 Iphone SE for about £100 last year , aftermarket battery, very pleased with it.
I went for lower cosmetic grade with more memory.
Scratched case, 128GB.

If you want a smaller phone, that's what it osts and genuine new battery will bump the cost.

Maybe 10 months on, the battery life is good, the fact it's non-genuine causes zero issues.
The phone does what I want and it's cheap enough to not be in tears if I trash it sailing or mountain biking,

Pay your money, take your choice.

I bought an iPhone SE from a similar type vendor on eBay. I too was rather miffed when I noticed the ‘this battery may not be genuine’ message.

But, I couldn’t be arsed returning it and took a chance. It’s been brilliant. Still going strong. Can’t even remember when I bought it but it was a year ago at least.

The SE is quite an old phone now so I’d rather a new aftermarket battery than a genuine one that was worn out.

Last year I bought an iPhone SE 2022 new in box from ebay that had AppleCare still on it. It also complained about a non-standard battery and wouldn't charge.

We took it to an Apple store, and because it still had AppleCare, they replaced it for us. I was a bit surprised they were prepared to do it, but they did. Was a bit of a faff, but it definitely worked out for us in the end.
