Would this scenario work?

Mrs. Ks car only has factory installed Apple Carplay installed; and I don't want to install an Android Auto MMI device just yet (due to warranty concerns).

The cars maps, and alerts is pretty poor, so looking at a way to be able to use Waze or TomTom Go as the primary map application.

My thinking is to buy a sim-free Iphone to install Waze and/or TomTom Go on it, and keep it in the car. Then anytime we need to use maps, we simply thether the Apple to our Android device to use our [unlimited data on EE].

Would that logic and scenario work? Sadly I don't have access to an iPhone to test before committing to buying a cheapie.

Is this for a BMW or Mini? If so, there's a third party app that gives a level of ability to access apps and features on an Android phone through the iDrive.

BMW with iDrive 6 smile

I tried the AAIdrive app, but that does not screenshare; unless you're thinking of something else ears

Basically what I'm after is getting a 3rd-party map displayed on the screen with sound (Waze, TTG, etc)

Would the iPhone be connected to the AirPlay unit through USB? If so, I can’t see why this wouldn’t work, but can check it out tomorrow

idea

I wonder if the Android challenges I'm having with AAIDrive are related to my phone security [hardcore setup].

I wonder if I use a generic Android phone if that would work with screen mirroring via bluetooth scratchchin

I'll have a play tomorrow night thumbup

Meh, only had about 40 minutes tonight and just could not get AAIDrive connected. The MY BMW app was open, logged in and active. I'll try again tomorrow night. Will reboot the phone and also try forcing it via a USB connection; along with turning bluetooth on/off; all the usual troubleshooting.

Just in case; to pre-empt any comments, ConnectedDrive is active.

But I'm not giving up smile

It shouldn't affect the warranty, as it just plugs in. For the price of a top-up sim card you may as well let the iPhone have it's own data, the usage is minimal for Waze, music etc.

The only consideration (and I don't know the answer), is whether the car will accept 2 phone connections - ie the Android via bluetooth for calls, and the iPhone via CarPlay for maps etc. Otherwise you'll be in a position whereby you can't answer calls on your phone while the CarPlay is connected.

Amazing how we have reached peak first world problems. Can we connect two phones to a car?

What will be the earth shattering problem next year?

Just like your Apple screen continually locking and you having to manually unlock it.

First world problems indeed smile

Some Bluetooth units claim to pair with two devices simultaneously. Not tried it though.

I might actually phone the BMW warranty folks and ask them directly if I installed/updated the system does it affect the complete warranty or just the stereo part of it. I know what the answer 'should' be .....
