Hi, I'm having some issues with staying connected to the internet across all of my devices in the house.

This is something that's occurring more and more frequently and generally will require the router to be reset.

For some reason the smart tv's will not reconnect without a reset, but xbox's\phones\tablets seem to reconnect most of the time.

The router I have is from talktalk and is at least 8 years old and I think its on its way out, and talktalk will not supply me a new one, or do anything other than have me running rings round the house repeatedly resetting my router to no avail.

I'm going to replace the router and have no idea with what.

In the house I have 4 smart tv's, 3 smart phone's, 2 tablets, 2 laptops, 1 PC, 3 xboxes. There is 4 of us so obviously not all in use at the same time. Son is a bit of a gamer, and we have a fibre to the box/copper to the house connection which usually gives a pretty stable 70 Mbps down /19 up.

The current router is a Sagemcom CS50001 which previously has done a decent job with no deadspots even in a fairly decent sized house with brick internal walls and even 60 ft out into the garden.

I also need it to be fairly simple, as Im no good with this stuff. I bought a TP link of some kind from currys on Wednesday but upon opening the box at home it appeared to needed to be connected to my old router and some set up involving things I do not know, things with lots of letters and numbers about types of connections and IP static or something something.

Basically I need a plug and play router that has good coverage that can do its internet thing, can any one help before my immediate family string me up for being a poor 'provider' (really bad pun I know. I still laughed a bit)

TP Link Deco X50 DSL, install the Deco app on your phone and follow the instructions, it is all very simple plug and play, with drop down menus to choose your ISP. I'm not familiar with TalkTalk but you may need to phone them for a username and password that will connect the line, when the Deco app asks for it.

Added bonus is because it is a Deco item, if you want to add another X50 (or more) to dot around the house to eliminate dead spots, they will mesh together to form one large network (that is you only see one network name) really easily.

I have the XE75 Pro versions of these and they have been utterly brilliant.

Going to get shot down here for not suggesting full Unifi mesh as a solution, but the Netgear nighthawks are pretty good for home solution and if needed running an ethernet over power to the upper floor or where you think signal is low.

For router I'd suggest something like the Netgear AX1800

Then for extending to the upper part of the house to something along the lines of https://www.netgear.com/home/wired/powerline/plw10...

Neither will break the bank cost wise and the Netgears run a very straight forward openvpn solution if you need remote access.

Edited to add - for a rudimental wifi survey to see where the addtional access-point/powerline should be placed download wifi-man from the app/play store

Did this start happening after you bought a new device that connects to the router?

I only ask because it sounds like the router might be using all the available IP addresses and power cycling restarts the process of issuing IP addresses so it works for a while until it runs out again...

It is worth a bit of time googling to see if you can get to see what the DHCP address range and lease time is in your router before spending any money on new kit, most routers that connect to the phone line die because of a surge up the phone line which doesn't sound like the issue being experienced.

I heard my UniFi fan boy name being called so here I am haha!

The UniFi express has just been released and I have it and it’s bloody great! Wi-Fi 6 and really strong signal and if you wanted to extend it more then the UniFi WiFi discs are cracking. I’ve got both and it’s been super robust.

Thanks for all the replies as it is all good food for thought.

For now I've paused the run out and buy stuff idea as the missus as been on the phone again to talktalk and they are sending out an engineer tomorrow. So either they'll fix it and charge us £75 quid, or hopefully they'll fix it and not charge us £75.
There is of course the possibly of not fixing anything and charging us...

Its really hard to say as has been going on since last year at some point, and having a young growing family, electric devices seem to multiply.

! thing I can be sure of is a couple of older smart tv's that weren't smart anymore and had firesticks plugged into them have gone the journey, and replaced with new smart TV's, and when they loose connection they either won't reconnect without a power cycle/reset, or if the program stops and you have to go out and back in to play again, it starts generally from the point you either turned the tv on and started watching if was partway through, or back to the beginning of the programme.

If I am running out of IP addresses then would a new router sort that, or would I need the internet provider to some how sort that?

Stop messing about and get TP Link Deco mesh, turn off the wifi on your crap free provider router and don’t look back, every time you swap provider you won’t have to change anything as it will all work through your mesh, no changing config or password.

I did see that product review and was tempted for a certain setup - but think it can only manage 4 devices (APs etc) which probably is good enough for 99% of homes.

Might have to get one to play with.
