Esim question

I'm going outside of Europe in a few days time and have purchased an esim for that country but haven't installed it yet.
Apparently you install it and it activates automatically when it detects network coverage.

I have a dual sim Samsung S21 +. The phone allows to you either use Sim 1 and Sim 2 or Sim 1 and an esim.
I already use two sims in the UK.

My question is; if I install the esim now will my Sim 2 immediately stop working? Or will it only stop working when I arrive at my destination and the esim detects a network?

On the iPhone you can turn off different lines - standard sim or E-sim. Maybe samsung is the same....
