Hi all I've decided to treat myself to a new monitor but I'm a few years out of touch with the latest kit.

I'm currently running a Samsung LC27HG70QQUXEN 27" as the main screen and a 29" LG Ultra Wide as my 2nd screen. The LG is nothing fancy.

I'm fancying an OLED or similar around 27" as a direct replacement for the Sammy.

I suppose I could do away with the LG as well and go for a single large screen but space on my desk is limited and I also have a pair of KEF LSX's on stands which are currently at the side of the Samsung.

The other question is what res to go for..... I'm currently set up for decent 1440 performance with a 4070 and a AMD 5900x but will probably splash out for a full system refresh when the 5000 series cards are released.

If I go for a 4k screen now I know the 4070 will struggle at native resolution but would it run at 1440 without looking crap ?

I suppose the sensible thing would be to wait and buy the new screen with the new system but you know ... Sometimes life is st and you need to cheer yourself up a bit with a new toy....

Thanks guys

I switched from dual 2k screens to a dell OLED 34" Alienware ultrawide and haven't looked back. Its epic and my 3070 runs games at full tilt on it. It had zoning on it too so when working if I shift drag a window it'll snap to left or right half and ,maximise.

Having a good trawl now reading reviews looks like it maybe worth waiting a few months for the latest gen 4k OLED panels.

Also seems 4k is not so much of a problem nowadays with modern upscaling tech I had not thought of that.

Yeah - I've looked at 4k, and at the distances we sit from the screen I just can't see the point . I'm running 3440,1400 ultrawide - so the "almost 4k" horizontal resolution is used will as its spread across the huge width, and then the "a bit more than half of 4k" horizontal res works well with how close you are. (4k is 3840 x 2160), and your graphic card gets a decent break from real 4k workloads.

This of course is if you want ultrawide - which is mainly a gaming thing. Pre ultrawide I was 2 x 2k 27" (I think) which worked brilliantly, but ultrawide is a game changer when..... gaming, of course :-)

If you don't want ultrawide then indeed, hang on for 4k OLED, but that's one hell of a res for close viewing (I already scale windows fonts up by 125%) - how much are they likely to cost? And upscaling... hmm. .... never been a fan of that tech. I like perfect pixel mapping - I'm still running a 1080p Projector on a 135" screen as you can't see pixels so have not justified the upgrade.

The main thing for me, is the res I'm running works well with a 3070. I would not go 4k on it then have to start turning effects down in games.

Edit - just seen you are mainly a game - go ultrawide!!! It's worlds apart from 16:9
Edit edit! - re-read and you have an ultrawide already :-) Still, I love the Alienware 34" :-)

NOOOOOO !!! Dont do this to me haha ! It's bloody difficult because when I want something I'm not one to hang around .... My Ultra Wide is not what you think ... It's a nice enough 29" and it does run at 75hz but it was only about 160 quid maybe 5 years ago ?

It makes a great 2nd screen but thats all.

One large Ultrawide would be great the problem is it wouldn't fit on my desk properly plus I always have a couple of windows open on the 2nd screen ....

I might order one of these later ... Asus ROG Swift OLED PG27AQDM

Holly s### what a beast ! In actual fact I think with my 27" Sammy as the 2nd screen I now have more space even with the big Dell !!

Def the right choice !!

Any tips on monitor / windows settings / HDR / streaming service hacks for UW's etc ?

Wife has just seen it and says I can move into the box frown

Haha :-) glad you (and not so much the wife) love it.

I installed the dell tool - Dell display manager - it lets you adjust settings without using the monitor menu.

The thing I use the most is the "Easy Arrange" feature, I divide my screen in two and then if I shift-drag a window it'll snap to full screen in either the left or right half - works great when I need email on the left and browser tabs on the right (website CMS backend) .

HDR? well that's a minefield I'm still not entirely sure I understant yet! I let win11 manage it. But I do use it, and Youtube can be astonishign in HDR - though it's all demos of people walking through night markets in Japan....

Well it's going back .... Mad really ....

Someone posted a coupon on Hotdeals that drops the price by £185.80.

Have a look on Dell's website and they have a price match within 30 days. Great I think !

Onto the chat and 30 minutes later Dell tell me they cant do anything because it's a coupon ... Even though it's on Dells website !

Apparently it just has to be the price that's dropped with no coupon etc.

So I've generated a return for the first monitor and ordered another £185.80 cheaper that should be here Monday.

Crazy but that's big companies I suppose.
