Revenue from parked domain
Discussion
Is it likely to attract type in traffic - either because it directly relates to a product/service and/or a company? If that's the case a page of appropriate affiliate links.
If he doesn't have short term plans maybe there'd be an option to lease it to somebody who might be better able to monetise it?

He's only just bought it with plans to hopefully make a lot more from it with a new business idea.jonsp said:

It's along the lines of "heaven.com" or "stress.com" rather than linked to a specific product or service. If he doesn't have short term plans maybe there'd be an option to lease it to somebody who might be better able to monetise it?

So a decent dictionary word that may well be a search term. How about putting up a "coming soon" page and see if it is getting any traffic? If there's no traffic there's no potential for monetisation.
If there is measurable traffic then as above a page with appropriate affiliate links.
Or maybe hire a content writer to throw up some content relating to the domain and see if he can get it ranked - this will obviously pay dividends later on when he starts his business. I'm assuming if the guys in a position to pay 6 figures he wouldn't be averse to throwing a few quid at content.

No he'd definitely be open to that, thank you, will relay this back to him.How about putting up a "coming soon" page and see if it is getting any traffic? If there's no traffic there's no potential for monetisation.

OP's BIL has just bought a domain for six figures. OP's assertion that the domain is worth six figures stacks, meeting (as it does) your test that the domain must recently have sold for six figures to be deemed to be worth six figures.r3g said:
I am idly interested to know how much the BIL paid for said domain and whether this was simply an offer that was accepted by the current owner, or he won it on a auction sale. Maybe it's just me, but spending 6 figures on a domain with no current use nor any immediate intention to start making it generate income doesn't strike me as a good business plan!
Auction. He does have plans for it but designs/builds etc take time and I was wondering if there were any worthwhile ways of it generating income in the mean time as in my mind it's the sort of address people may visit "just to see what's there"Tyndall said:

Certainly possible. But seems strange the guy can spend 6 figures on a domain but hasn't stuck a page on the domain to establish how many people do actually visit the domain. This would obviously be a vital/obvious 1st step in determining how/if to monetise the domain.
Do short domains really mean anything now? People are quite good at typing and search engines/advertising/auto complete means barely anyone is actually going to type the whole domain in manually.
The days of exact match domains having any measurable impact on SEO must be over as well.
