Help with notes and Gmail/iPhone

My Gmail inbox is almost full because the Notes app on my iPhone seems to generate several "emails" in Gmail every time I create or edit a note in the Notes app. Each of these emails is just a copy of the note from the Notes app.

This has left me with many thousands of messages in my "All Mail" folder in Gmail. Each note might have 10 or 20 identical emails associated with it.

What's going on? How can I stop this?
