Internet connection query

During the storm last night, in common, I'm sure, with millions of others, we lost our internet connection. Mrs. Tuono was distraught, and I was ordered to 'do something'.
Which got me thinking. We still had our landline, which was working fine. I reset the router to avail. So went to bed, without actually doing 'something'. And this morning, as if by magic, everything is back to normal. i know it's not our equipment, as a few in the village had the same issue.
Can anyone enlighten me as the pathway an internet connection takes to our property? I was under the impression that it all depended on a phone line, as that's what the router plugs into, and that was fine for voice calls.

Do you have two cables coming into the house?Which got me thinking. We still had our landline, which was working fine. I reset the router to avail. So went to bed, without actually doing 'something'. It can be from water ingress, power cuts, wiring breaks etc.
The voice part of your phoneline is much more resilient than the broadband side as it is likely still analogue - so instead of cutting out it will have crackles and pops etc on it. The broadband is digital so if there is too much noise then it will cut out.
With more modern "Fibre" phone line based broadband the internet connection is seperated out at the street cabinet, rather than at the telephone exchange, so from that point is using different cabling than your phone. And from the exchange they are completely different networks.

At your telephone exchange the signal from your line are split between the voice and data,. The voice signal goes to the exchange voice switch and the data goes to a DSLAM and onto the internet. Anything from the DSLAM onwards could have gone down causing the internet loss but keeping the voice signal up. IME DSLAM power is not as robust as that for the voice switch in the exchange (in some cases) so that may have been the issue. Which got me thinking.
