I've got an Android phone and use Google Maps for nav. Is it possible to make the voice instruction come from the phone speaker when the phone is connected to my car Bluetooth stereo? At the minute the only way I can hear the commands is to be listening to streaming music from my phone, so the commands come through the car stereo, or turn the Bluetooth off, so it comes through the phone. I want to hear the nav commands when I'm listening to the normal radio, but still be able to receive hands free calls through the car.

Google Maps >>> Settings >>> Navigation Settings >>> Play Voice Over Bluetooth

Not promising anything, but try it and hopefully it'll do what you need.
By toggling it to the Off position it should come through your phone speaker, rather than the car speakers via BT.

Not a direct answer but a possible solution, would be to download a radio app on to your phone and listen to the radio via Bluetooth to your car. That way you can listen to what you want and have the directions come through. It doesn’t seem to use much data in the scheme of things. That's my work around although I’m on iPhone. BBC Sounds gets you the BBC radio stations and other apps will allow all the other digital stations.

This is the answer, as you need to give the car's head unit one input, either radio or bluetooth.

I just tried this myself, and it works exactly as you want as per your original post.

Can continue to listen to radio stations on the car head unit, have navigation instructions from the phone speaker, and use the BT handsfree of the car.

Your mileage may vary of course, dependent on phone model, BT version, car model etc etc etc

Thanks all, I think Corso's solution is the one for me.

If not I'll have to get with the 2020s and start streaming all my entertainment as suggested. The problem with that is changing stations on the move is tricky. I don't have Android Auto or anything like that.

This is what I do. It surprises me just how little data Radio and Navigation use.
