My 5 year old daughter wanted an XBox for Christmas, apparently her friends have them and from what I had seen of them playing on consoles they're mostly harmless looking games about clothes and make up or dance mats with movement sensors and stuff. I've never been into gaming of any sort so don't know much about them, so she got one.

Now, with a bit of encouragement from older siblings, it seems to be mainly used for gratuitous shooting games, Roblox and other stuff I don't really think is appropriate for a 5 year old. I don't think I am overly puritanical. When I try to put age appropriate restrictions on it it seems to lock everything and she can't use it at all. I have tried playing around with the settings etc (though I will admit to a lack of patience) and can't seem to find any happy medium, so the thing has sat there most of this week unused.

Is this the wrong console for that age, or have I set it up wrong?

Have you set up a child account for her, or are you just locking down the main account?

If so set up an account for her as per instructions here.

I have set up a child account for her, but that seems to block Roblox completely, which is the main thing she wants to play. I don't mind the jumping and dressing up stuff but don't want her communicating by video or messaging etc. I can't seem to find a happy medium.

Allow Roblox in the Xbox family settings, then go here to learn how to disable chat in Roblox
