newish secondhand smart phone
Discussion
I am not a techie, I dont have to have the latest iphone/android galaxy with 6 cameras etc. I dont upgrade to the latest model and/or spend thousands on a telephone.
I currently have a galaxy S8. it does me fine, but the wifey has an older hooway, (Geordie/chinese phone) but the battery is going.
She has asked for more battery power/time. The phone is mainly used for pix. apps and phone calls but not a lot of either. She does a lot of hiking and the map my walk app runs out of juice after 2 hrs...hence the longer lasting battery is a must.
We would like to stay under £100....Thought about the S10, maybe stretch to an S10 +......BUT maybe the S series has too many addons etc and maybe a newer A series samsung would do. Why Galaxies....coz its what I have got and I think they are fine.
Thoughts, please and recommendations....(not just Galaxies if you like).....I have heard of several of the recon websites etc...

I had a Motorola G7 which was a fairly basic android smartphone, but the battery lasted for ages.
Then bought a secondhand S10 at about 2 years old, the battery life was crap. Was still in warranty so after a bit of backwards and forwards with Samsung they eventually replaced the battery and screen free of cost, pretty much on the last day of the warranty, and it's been good for the last 2 and a half years.
The Samsung is a nicer phone to use, materials etc are better, but I'd have no hesitation with having another G7. Functionality was basically the same, same operating system.
Take a look at the A series Samsung, they're not bad phones and with a lower spec processor and camera should come better battery life.
FWIW I'm looking to upgrade my S10 at some point, simply because duel sim or eSim capability would be useful, and while you can get duel sim S10 phones mine isn't one, and it won't accept an eSim as they didn't come in until the S20. Only useful if you spend time abroad though.

The s10 is £300+. Quite far from being under £100...
My mum was looking for a new phone a while back. I got her a galaxy a22. It's perfect for casual use, watching YouTube and taking the odd pic. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles, but it gets the job done.
A step above would be a galaxy a32. I have one that was given to me as a work phone. It seems decent enough. Larger and better in every way than a a22. The battery life is very good. But this also means it weighs more. Currently on Amazon for £180.
Have a look on gsmarena. There's a handy little tool you can use to compare phone specs.

I'm still using my old Motorola G7 Power. It does run an outdated version of Android, but I run an antivirus for peace of mind.
Usually I get 3 to 5 days use before I need to recharge, although heavy use will reduce this (if you're a 24/7 social media addict you're stuffed).
I use the OS Maps for hill walking. If I'm recording a walk plus photos plus regular map checks etc I'll get through half the charge in an 8 hour walk.
You'll get one in your budget.

Does it need to be used. You can get some decent phones for around £100 new these days if you don't need the most powerful model.
Like this Nokia

Other phones are available. Biggest issue at that price range is that they may not be that drop resistant... But neither will a used phone at £100.

- Edited to add. The deal seems to be live now despite saying it's from tomorrow. Also when you go to buy it there is a £10 coupon available which brings the price down to £104.

I've had a string of Samsung Galaxy phones over the last decade or so - S6, S7, currently on my second (maybe third!) S9. I like the Galaxy interface and the camera quality but I'm really getting fed up with the battery and charging problems that I've had with them.
My current S9, I bought it new less than two years ago but the battery life is very disappointing. I can charge it fully overnight and it can run down by mid-afternoon despite being used only to check social media/emails a few times and maybe a brief call or two. I'm not using it to stream films or anything like that.
Worse, the last three phones that I've had, the charging port has packed up completely, usually after little over a year. So I'm relying on an induction charger and cannot transfer data by cable.
My daughter has a Xiaomi Poco and my partner has an iPhone, both of which seem to work much better than my phone. I've always avoided iPhones because years ago it used to be difficult to transfer files to/from a PC, but I'm told that's less of an issue now.

It's the Redmi Note 12 4G, with 4GB RAM, 128GB.They also do Redmi Note 12 5G, Redmi Note 12 Pro 5G, and Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, all progressively more expensive

I had am S10+ for about 3 years and only went for an upgrade due to the degraded battery life. I now have one of those Samsung Flip Phones and still enjoy the novelty 19 months on, but the battery life is if anything worse than the S10+ had become.
I would imagine a lot of people sell phones due to the battery life having degraded, so I would be reluctant to go 2nd hand on that basis alone.
Best of luck
